I'm gonna get some Motorola two way FRS radios (actually a pair) so that we can communicate and not be lost. I'd recommend it to others at our outing so we can yell "where you at?" like everyone else into the radios. ha ha

Tom,
You may want to look into the "GMRS" version... same frequency, more power. From personal experience, the range for FRS is somewhat overstated (*maybe* it will make stated range, in an interference-free area, with direct line-of-sight). You need the extra power the GMRS gives you.

Ahh, but those higher power radios require a license from the FCC to operate (legally). :)

Hey a meet up that I can actually attend! I would love to join you master photographers at the Zoo! You can't laugh at my camera though and I will try not to drool over yours! I will keep my eye on this thread to get the info as we get closer to the date.

Anyone have a ham radio license?

I have an "Advanced" class license.

My call sign is KM6AD if anyone is interested.

Well, went to WalMart and picked up a Cobra 8 mile range FRS/GMRS combo 22 channel pack of two with ear bud receivers, recharger, NiCd batteries for $34.96. What a bargain, seems to pick up police freq. as well as they were chasing a stabbing perp. It was LADP, so it was far away, I hear GMRS can be bounced with towers, etc, so I think it was being bounced. Go figure. I had better register myself with the FCC, so I can be completely legit, he he. All the talk of range is actually theoretical, I'll be able to get 8 miles if the two units are on peaks of mountains perhaps.
Yea, everyone should get one, it would be a good way to keep of the stragglers that we always seem to have.

Don't turn me into the Feds man, I swear, I just got this today and will register with Big Brother by tomorrow. I don't want the Feds kicking down my door at night to protect the GMRS airwaves.... :D

Alright gang... softball season is officially over, so as far as I can tell, June 11 is open for me! Been to the zoo several times this year (since I have the pass), but would love to go again.

My 28-135 IS doesn't seem to want to focus under about 10 feet in either AF or MF mode, so I have to get that looked at. It's only a few months old, so it's still under warranty. Where do you all send your stuff for repairs? The closest service center I can find seems to be in Irvine. Any help would be appreciated.
06/01/2005 02:15:42 AM · #38
Hi Chuck,
I think Irvine is the closest and only US repair center. Sorry to hear about the 28-135 IS. I have one as well and have had no problem with it. I think it might be too short for the zoo, no? I've been to the zoo quite a bit as well, so I'm thinking about giving myself a challenge like shooting in B/W only and trying to get unusual compositions only. Took all the typical shots that I wanted to anyway.

BTW, are we on for travel town or the aquastrian center afterwards? and anyone else getting/have those neat little walkie-talkies?
Over and out.

I tell ya about those Canon IS lenses :).

well as far as the Aquastrain center I need to leave before 2ish. Just found out that I have to attend a graduation in Riverside so.. uugg.. at least i don't have to take photos :D.

What time will we be meeting at the zoo?

Tom: I wasn't thinking about that lens for the zoo, but thought I would ask about it since we are all in the same area. I'll probably bring my 100-400 IS and the 16-35 and 24-70. I have the 70-200 as well, but I'm not sure I can lug around that many lenses... all I have is my small pack. I also have a couple of the motorola radios. I will bring those along as well.

Ah, the old Canon dust pumper heh...
Cool, we'll all walkie and talkie and shootie
I'm surprised that you got a 28-135 IS when you have a 24-70L since the coverage is very similar, but anyway.

Are we still on for something after the zoo? I'd prefer to be at the zoo early as possible, as they are more active when it is early and cool.

With the triple rebate, the 28-135 ended up costing only about $250, so I couldn't pass it up.

What is the time table for meeting at the zoo? is it 10:00 am?
06/01/2005 10:24:09 PM · #43
The zoo opens at 10 AM. The best day of shooting was when I got there early and when it was overcast as all the animals were very active. I guess they were waking up or something. I'd like us to all be there ready with the tickets and waiting at the gait at 10AM. By about 12PM, I'd bet the animals will be hiding and asleep if it's sunny and hot. Plus the midday light sucks and the zoo closes at 5PM before the sun starts to set, so only good light will be in the morning before the mid sun. I guess if we take most of the day shooting, then we probably won't have time for any other shooting venue. Is there a place around the Zoo to shoot sunsets?

Chuck,
I know the feeling about not being able to pass up a good deal on a lens if it is available. I'm contemplated getting the Sigma 50-500 in the new version for the zoo myself.

I have a regular FRS radio and will have it for the zoo excursion. I might have extras but don't know where they are at the moment.

10AM at the zoo with ticket in hand, eh? Alrighty! I'll be there with my 16-35 and 70-300. :) I took one shot in Vegas with the 70-300 but it sucked so I haven't posted it. Hopefully I'll get to use it a lot at the zoo!

As for sunset shots, one day I'd like to go to the pier in Santa Monica or even Redondo or something. I'm pretty much open for anything after the zoo unless I'm too tired.

Sorry to hear about your lens problems, Chuck, but glad I'll get to see you after a long hiatus! :)

10:00am at the zoo sounds great. Tom, swing by my place at 9:45am and I'll drive to the zoo if you want. It's not like I don't like 2 miles from it! Your call. Just let me know.

As for sunset, I say we try to drive up Griffith Park's West entrance to go to the observatory or head up to Mulholland Drive off Cahuenga. There's a nice sunset over hollywood, but no real 'form' in front of us but the LA basin below. I don't want to drive to the beach considering I live right near the zoo, sorry. I can bow out though if you all want to go.

Keep me posted :) I can check back here tonight. I can't check DPC from work :(

Arie,
If you want me to pick you up, we should meet early, as there is a ticket line for the zoo. So I'd say maybe 9:30?
Your sunset suggestion sounds good. I didn't know the at the observatory was open, but if it is, I'd like to swing by.
06/03/2005 01:46:55 AM · #47
Ok, get me at 9:30am. The observatory is not open actually. But, you can get close to it. I vote for Mulholland Drive overlooking Downtown for sunset. :)

If there is a long line for tickets, can someone buy mine and I'll pay them back? Not like I'm trying to be lazy but it'll speed things up if we can save a few minutes here and there especially if the line is long.

Wish I could, as I've really been wanting to make it out to the zoo lately and haven't gone yet.. but my finals are that same week - and if the final project for one of my classes is anything like the one I turned in a couple weeks ago - I'll need every minute I can get approaching the due date on Monday! If I somehow manage to finish ahead of time (not something I'm known for), then I'll try to make it out.. but either way, I hope you guys have fun!

Sorry we'll miss you Brian! But, good luck on getting your work done! School's definitely a priority :) We'll see you next time! Summer will be hot, but we'll try to plan a few get togethers!!!
