This lens looks awesome. I am thinking of getting it. I like shooting in low light conditions and I'm working on some portraits, so this would be ideal. I keep reading great things. Do you know of any drawbacks of this lens?

Well, I just ordered this lens. Couldn't help myself, it looks awesome. Thank god I just received a raise at work. :)

Will the lens fit on my coolpix? lol. just kidding

Awesome! Some awesome bokeh with this lens. I read that the f/1.4 isn't much different in quality from the 1.8 so I opted for the 1.8, even though it's not as fast. Plus the 1.8's much less expensive.

What's the closest focusing distance for this lens? Looks like you can get quite close.

The f/1.8 is a Bargain. The f/1.4 has a metal mount, has USM and is generally better built...but is it worth an extra US$220...maybe...

The F1.4 is definitely worth it. 2/3 of a stop is 59% more light (2^(2/3)). Also, build is better, focus is USM, it has a distance meter, metal mount, and is much heavier, balancing out the camera better. I bought the 50 1.4 after owning the 50 1.8 for 6 months. The 50 F1.4 is also sharper at F1.8 than the 50 F1.8 is and provides suitable pictures wide open, something the F1.8 didn't usually do.

We talking Nikon or Canon? Ken Rockwell, whom I trust immensely says to "Pass on this lens (the 1.4) in favor of the sharper, less expensive and distortion-free 50mm f/1.8."

Tell that to his photo gallery and excellent tutorials. :P just kiddin'. not trying to start a war here. We all have our opinions. :)

P.S. I'm quite delusional myself. :)

I just got the Nikon 1.8 one last week. Mine was from B&H as well. I haven't got to use it as much as I'd like yet, but the preliminary results are promising :) I really think I'll love it more and more once I get to play with it more!

That's great. I've never used a fixed lens before so it will be new to me and I'll probably attempt to zoom in by force of habit. :) I love the fact that it's so fast. That's what drew me to the lens. Can't wait to try it out.

I've shot a ton more with mine now, and I must say - it's so much my favorite lens!

The thing I notice though is how sharp it is compared to my sigma lenses. (side note here, went down and tried out the new 80-200 VR lens from Nikkor, so sharp it made my 50mm look blurry!)

This is by far the best $100 I've spent.

More portrait stuff shot with it over Memorial Day weekend here:
