I watched this green heron for about 1/2 hour today, making an absolute pig of himself.

I saw 1 too. It was pretty far away. And my shoots aren't as nice as yours. I was pretty excited to see it though.

Fantastic shots... out of curiousity, did you use and extender with your lens.
I am amazed as to how close you got to this fella. We have a vast number of blue herons in the area where I live, but they are ever so skittish and will fly away at the least bit of noise.
Great job.

Peecee: Yes, if my camera can do it, so can yours. I think the L glass is a big plus. Remember, the 70-200 f4 is canon's most affordable "big glass."
Ray: No extender, just the 70-200. The shots are cropped and processed though. I was about 18-20 feet away. Here are two more, one from a different angle where he's actually in the process of grabbing a fish:

2 more stunners John, as for "most affordable" I'm afraid £400 is a tad too much at the moment:) |

Some shots my daughter took. She can get amazingly close to birds and really enjoys using MY camera and MY lens.
edit: whoops! wrong account

Beautiful birds everyone!! Now, can you help me identify this one? I'm assuming it's some kind of Heron but I know almost nothing about birds. I got a few shots of this guy while were in Florida last week and he didn't seemed to be disturbed by our presence at all... Beautiful!

Looks like a great blue heron, maybe a juvenile, but I'll have to check. |
