I have just started experimenting in RAW format on my nikon d70 I have got some excellent, but when I bring them into edit they are noisy and horrible, can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong!?

High ISO and/or underexposure? just guessing, but these two things, particularly in combination, are the main culprits.

no iso is as low as it can go on nikon d70 only at 200 and I shot it with the light meter so it is not under exposed

What RAW converter are you using? And what editing software?

What software are you using for RAW conversion? Sometimes the default settings are too harsh and need to be adjusted. Adjustments in the RAW converter can make the shadows or evenly coloured areas look too noisy.

Someone on here suggested "Real World Camera RAw with Adobe Photoshop CS". I bought this because I took a couple of pictures in RAW and thought OMG that's ugly! So now I'm reading trying to figure out and then come back in here and ask some questions about the stuff I don't get! You can get it from bookpool.com, overnited for less than what you get it at BAMM. Love bookpool!

anyone?? I am sitting here trying to edit these photos and it is driving me nuts! it wouldn't be so bad if they looked horrible when I look at them in the organizer. In the organizer they look stunning but as soon as I try and put them into editor!! it looses detail and color!! i have tried everything on the raw settings: exposure, shadows..ect ect ect... but they still look like spit -p + h

Try RAW Shooter Essentials - free at

RSE

I use it and it works well. After loading try converting using the Auto feature for exposre. Then fine tune from there. That should give you a good start.

Good luck.

BTW - I tried PSE 3 and found it less intuitive than RSE.

One other note on RSE. Read the 75 page manual that is available when you download it. It is the best RAW coversion info I have found and worth the read. Also, RSE tends to oversharpen so slide the Sharpening bar to -50 when converting and then add sharpening when it is time to print or post.

I did this once.... when you open the pics, are you opening them in 16 bit? (It is on the first screen when you open them). I did that and they looked pink and green and very noisy. Maybe that's what is wrong.

That's what happens when the software doesn't support 16 bit very well. I get the same effect when trying to open a 16 bit image in Digital Image Pro 7. In 8 bit everything is fine.
