I'm off to NC next week and plan on swinging through the Chesapeake, Chincoteague, Assateague, and Baltimore area on my way home. Any must-sees? I'm not sure how much time I'll have but I would like to shoot some lighthouses. I know there are a bunch there (I found a terrific map of them online) but I'm wondering which are easiest to get to and are the best to shoot (and hopefully close together)? Any other info is great appreciated as well.
Thanks!
Jen

Hi Jen!
I live about an hour north of Baltimore... drop me a line if you want to meet up either in Baltimore or on your way north from there!
EDIT: If you hit the Baltimore Inner Harbor, check out the Lighship Chesapeake -- it will fit in nicely with your lighthouse tour.
Either way, enjoy your trip!
-Terry

| I used to live near Chincoteague, there is a wildlife preserve there which at times has many types of birds and the "wild" ponies. Just as you cross the bridge onto the Island, there are some fishing docks, if the boats are in it will be very picturesque. There is rocket launching facility on Wallops Island, remote but a place where few folks get to and not used very often these days. Be prepared for mosquitos, salt water variety feeds 24 hours a day and they are voracious. North of Chincoteague there is a ghost town, George Island Landing. Never took pictures in those days, but I recall it being very striking to see the old abandonded houses. Enjoy the trip. |

Thanks everyone!
Skip, I'll be visiting my brother in the Winston-Salem area (northwest NC). I'm bringing my mother along and we want to visit some net friends in the Baltimore area so I figured the Chesapeake area would be a nice 'longcut' (versus shortcut :-D) to get there.
Terry, thanks for the suggestion and offer. I'll only have about two days in the area and will be visiting others so unfortunately I won't have any additional time to meet up. Maybe another time!
Ron, everything I've read mentions the mosquitos. Are they really bad? Bugs, well, bug me. Especially mosquitos. Is it worth fighting the bugs to see the horses, lighthouses, and shore or would you recommend skipping that area and going elsewhere?
Harvey, thanks a bunch for the email. Great info. I'll write you soon!
Thanks again, guys.
Jen
