I went for a second hand Nikon 70-210 based mainly on this review. I'm very happy with it :)

Nikon would probably be the best. The Sigma, Tamoron, Quantaray (made by Sigma) is reverse engineered.

Go with the Nikon. Get the ED glass.

Don't know about the Nikon, but out of the rest, I'd recommend the Sigma.

I have only used the Sigma, but I have to say, I am very pleased with it. It's very nice.

I have only one Sigma lense... but what a lense! I have no doubt but to recommend Sigma if you are on a budget. The difference between these lenses are so small, for a hobbiest/amateur and even a more serious amteur, it is not even noticible.

OK, if you are that serious and see the purchase of a lens as a long term investment AND want to feel good about showing off your lenses... go for the nikon.

Actually to be honest I'm not that happy with the sigma - when you are on a budget (ala me) you can't really expect that much, but the manual focus is kinda jerky, the autofocus tends to hunt a lot, and the macro mode (which is pretty cool) extends the lens to such length as to make it very difficult to handhold at speeds lower than 1/180.

But really, I guess I can't complain, it was basically the cheapest zoom lens on the market here - and I have got some nice use out of the macro capabilities (though usually with the help of a tripod).

I guess it depends wich one you buy. In the sigma line-up you have twi 70-300mm, the regular and the APO. I have the APO and so far I'm very pleased with it. The sharpness is great and the focus is not that slow for a lens as long as that one. I'd highly recommend it. I don't know for the others but from what I heard, the regular one is not worth it. Unlike samtrundle, the only thing that deceive me with that lense is the macro function. I stopped expecting anything good out of it and I'll be on the market for a real macro lens soon.

I have the Sigma 4-5.6 APO Macro Super 2 for the Canon. I got it new on ebay for $190 shipped. The non-apo is about $150, and for the price difference get the APO version. The Tamron rates just as good, but i went sigma (to try a sigma lens if nothing else) and it is quite nice.

The macro funciton impresses me. I had low expectations but am impressed.
This is handheld...

The Tameron is a slow loud lens... I have one ...and although I shoot with it alot ... do yourself a favor and get the real macoy!

I have the Sigma 70-300 APO for Canon, and I must say I'm really happy with it. I usually shoot handheld and I've gotten reasonably good results... not sure how different the Canon and Nikon Sigma's are.
Some pics for the Canon are here (no one seems to have posted any for the Nikon):

I have 70-300 on my film Pentax MZ-7 and it seems to be the best zoom I have

If price is not your deciding factor go for the Nikon.
