I shot some sunset photos at ISO 1600 with my XT. These are just about some of the most grainy pictures I have ever seen! I thought the quality of ISO 1600 on the XT was supposed to be decent? The amount of noise and grain is incredibly high. If you look at the photo, it's the first thing you notice. I will post a few samples when I get home, however, is the ISO 1600 performance poor in low light?

Yes. It's a little better than the 300D but not nearly as clean as a 20D. NOW you know why the sensors are different. |

I can't stand using ISO 1600 most of the time... ISO 800 is not that bad on the 300D though! I thought the XT was better too.

Why were you using ISO 1600?

i was shooting by a river and it was getting dark. i wanted the sunset look (the sun was not in the picture). but i also wanted to see the boats.
the river, the sky, and the white boats, look like they were made of rainbow colored sand. |

Flat elements of the image have got to be the worst thing for showing noise. I can imagine the sky shots looked pretty bad!
Use high ISO for something like sports and it would produce acceptable results.

What lens and armature were you using? could you of set your camera up in a better configuration not to use ISO 1600? And was you trying it handheld?

i was using the 17-85 IS usm. with IS on at 17mm. i dont remember the specs on the shot, but it was around 1 second or less. maybe about 1/10th. the aperture was wide open at f 4 or f 4.5.
when i get home ill post it in detail |

I know its no great photo but it was taken today at ISO 1600 on my 300D with the kit lens. Not brilliant but still usuable
original + usm
100% Crop + usm

Here's the unedited shot that was an outtake for my 5 submission (coz it is 6)
shot at 1600 with no post processing at all
I think the blacks are remarkably noise free

Noise (not grain) as always been a bit of an irritant on the 300D even at iso100 there is some... I never realised that until I upgraded. |

Oh man you guys are KILLING me!!!
Here's my *gulp* ISO320 (highest) setting for comparison:
-------Resized only----- -------100% crop-------
These were taken in Program mode (auto-everything)
and full average metering. No adjustments made at all,
in or out of camera, and were taken under a lot of
flourescent lighting here inside my shop.
Basically ISO80 is the only thing I can shoot at, with ISO160
being pretty iffy, and requiring a lot of post-processing if I do.
Gotta' be rough to be able to shoot in the 400+ ISO range...
UGH! |
