I'm considering a replacement in the near future for my 'kit' lens. I really like the idea of dropping to a f/2.8 (as my 70-200mm IS has shown me just what a difference such can make). These two both seem very promising. They are both priced at the $500 mark ($499/$479 respectively per B&H). Which one and WHY?

Not opposed to a Tamron. But I passed on that one because it was an f/2.8 thru f/4.0. And I am kinda into that f/2.8 all the way thru. Especially for only $20-$50 more.

For what it's worth, I've read and seen pictures on dpreview forums that the sigma 18-50 f2.8 is noticibly soft at f2.8.

Check out the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di lens. I have it for my D70 and it is AWESOME! You should be able to get it for about $350.

There are a fwe others on here that have it and love it as well.

Reviews on teh 18-50 are few and far between. The best i can find is yes, it is a bit softer than the canon 17-35L at 2.8 vs the canon at F4. Not a fair comparison in many ways. It may vignette a bit at the widest end wide open in test, but that is not noticeable in real world pics.
And if you want 2.8 all the way, it is about hte only game in town.

The tamron 17-35 has very good reviews, and at PhotoZone the two rate so close as to be a toss up. THe Sigma 17-35 2.8-4 does not rate nearly as well. (2.79, 2.76, 1.71 on a 1-5 scale)

I ordered the 18-50 2.8 last night via an ebay dealer (he has 3 more new ones) for $420. Saved $80 over b&h.

If you can be patient for a week (i know i can't!) I can post pics and such.

And cbeller, there is a fairly big difference on the wide end between 18 and 28 on a APS-C dSLR. The 18-50 is = to 28-75 on a full frame or 35mm film slr. That 28-75 or one other one i was looking at in the same zoom range is next on my list. Then a probably 12-24...this game never ends, does it?

Let's see if I can estimate the price on that.
Twice the range of the 24-70 F2.8L, but it's also super wide angle, and those must be hard to make. Add IS....I'd say close to $3000 for one of those. I dunno, sounds awesome I might want one...

Edit: Now that I think about it, it'd be a much bigger lens with much bigger elements, $3000 would be quite a bargain!

Check out the reviews of this lens at fredmiranda.com once the site is resuurected. Lots of people compare it optically to the 24-70L and some have even traded their L glass for it because it's 1/3 the price.

My guess, is it'd look like a slightly smaller version of the Canon 200mm f/1.8

Canon EF 200mm f/1.8 USM

Probably not the response you are looking for, but have you considered a nice fast prime? The shallow depth of field available at f2.0 and below opens up some creative possibilities and you may find the restrictions of working with a single focal length can sometimes be advantages. The Canon 35mm f/2, 50mm f/1.4, and 85mm f/1.8 are fantastic lenses and very reasonably priced given their capabilities.

Yes, i did...in fact, that's what i first looked at. But I am looking for something to give me a wide angle and the 35mm on a 20D is equivalent to 55mm. That's pretty far from wide.

This was my favorite lens. To my mind, the only downside was that sometimes the 28mm just wasn't wide enough.

However... since I bought the 20D with the Canon 17-85 EF-S IS lens, I've switched to that lens and haven't hardly used the Tamron since. The 2.8 was nice. But what I discovered in comparing the two lenses is that the Canon lens is much sharper!

So now, about the only time I pull out the Tamron is if I need the 2.8 due to low light. And even that doesn't happen too often because ISO 1600 on the 20D is so clean.

I highly recommend it. You get a nice sharp lens, with a good range even on a 1.6x sensor. And you get image stabilization too.

For me, I'd stay with the kit lens and get a 50mm f1.8. Really cheap, really fast, and really sharp from what I heard and I don't really use my 18-50 under 50mm really often in my everyday shooting.
