I love henna tattooing- I think the designs are amazing. So last weekend while I was at the Renaissance Festival, I got one done! Don't worry, they only last a few weeks ;)

While I have it, I'd like to photograph it! Anyone have any suggestions for interesting or creative setups? I now have a full studio set up- a pair of Hensel Integra 500w/s lights, 2 white umbrellas with black backs, a small softbox, a backdrop stand and a white backdrop and a gray one.

The photo above was just a quickie with the camera on tripod in front of the gray backdrop, with the softbox to my left. Thus the shadow. I just wanted to do a quick snap to show you guys and get some ideas from.

So whaddya think?? Hopefully I'll be able to spend some time tomorrow shooting it!

Did you only get it on what we see in the photo you posted?

Well... it goes all the way around my wrist. ;)

But yes- just on my hand. That was $40!!! I wasn't about to pay for more.

Dont really have any suggestions on the studio setup. Good luck with that!

Just wanted to say that if you like henna tattoos to make sure you never ever use or have a tattoo done with black henna. From the image you posted it looks like 'real' henna.

Okay, then wrap up your face / head with a beautiful dark cloth, alla a Librodo "eyes" pic. Place your hand over your face, arrange your fingers in an attractive way so that one or both of your eyes peers through your fingers, whichever looks good.

Light it evenly, shoot so everything is in clear focus then convert to black & white or a nice duotone.

Good idea! I'll give that a try. I'm also thinking of doing something with just my hand and a flower of some sort. Maybe an orchid, if I can find one.

Pretend to wave your hand over a crystal ball, while wearing a gypsy type outfit. :-)

I would do a duotone or sepia effect with lots of dodging and burning : )

That would require a crystal ball.... :D

Those things are expensive!! Unfortunately I'm pretty thin on props- I'm packing everything up to ship to Australia or take to Texas! (We're going to TX for a few months, then leaving the country- we're packing everything up for both moves now. Sigh)

You can see some of them in this thread.

I'd show you the gallery from the Ren Fest on my site, but then you'd see my lighting entry! I'll post the link when the challenge ends.

I don't know about Atlanta but here in San Francisco you can pick up a kit in any Indian deli/grocery store for $8 and it has patterns and enough henna to do half your body. Perhaps not as fun as getting it done at an event but if you want more done it's a simple and inexpensive process.

I can't offer you suggestions on lighting, but try this link to find how others have photographed ...

I would suggest a pose where the dislay of the hand seems natural as opposed to a "hey...here's my hand" shot. Perhaps your hand caressing a cheek, yours or his. You behind him in a duo pose, where you have your arm comes gracefully over his shoulder in an embrace from behind etc, or you could be cracking him one over the head wi....nah.. you get the picture.

How big a crystal ball would you be envisioning for this shot?

THIS IS PRICELESS INFORMATION !!!
Thank you for posting it.
I hope the people that have visited this thread have taken the time to look over the web site below. I wonder how many people have been effected by PPD black henna.

I dunno, bowling ball size? Maybe smaller? Having no experience as a gypsy fortune teller (apparently from India) I have no idea :D
