Have we ever had a challenge with absolutely no editing rules?

Although I would certainly do miserably, it would be interesting to see the potential creativity with nothing holding us back.

Any interest?

Once in a while I think is fine. Also, 'no processing' challenges are good once in a while as well.

... making them the extra challenge rather than 'the' challenge for the week.

Agreed.
Sometimes however, I get inspired in new ways by seeing peoples' photo art. Plus, IMHO it seems that digital art is a valid form of photographic expression? I don't know... It's just that some of the people here are so talented, I'd like to see how far they can take it.

If you want to take it really far, you can always have a look at //www.worth1000.com or even participate.

While digital art is certainly a valid form of expression but it doesn't always include the photographic, or minimizes it's part. And this site is supposed to emphasize the photographic part. There are many sites that emphasize the digital art side of the equation, probably more of them than ones leaning our way. Some are exclusively for editing like PhotoshopContest.com.

I wouldn't mind a challenge where there are no limits on the editing techniques as long as the details pointed the entrants to editing a photograph to make it look it's best, and away from using a photo as a basis for a departure into something entirely different (maybe the rule about adding or removing major elements should be retained). And it would only be fair to have one if the people who want to see a no editing challenge also got their wish.
