My friend here has recently ordered a Canon A95 from butterflyPhoto.com and a 512MB card to go with it. As it will be brought to India we will be purchasing the case and batteries here. I had two nagging doubts which I knew were best answered by experts here...

1. the rating of the store i.e.www.butterflyphoto.com. How many of you guys have used them and found them ok?

2. what solution do you suggest for the batteries for the camera? NiMh I have heard are good. Are they re-chargable? Any other better solutions we could implement?

thanks in advance.

Their reviews appear positive, although be aware that if you have to call in for some reason, there are multiple reports of rude customer service representatives.

Yes, NiMH are very good. they can be rechargend about 1000 times. Try to get at least 2100 mA, and 2300 for the best duration. They last much longer than good alcaline batteries. Thei're very cost effective. And a fast charger is a must, if you for some reason are in a hurry. Sometimes there are packs of 4 batteries and a charger that comes cheaper. And some spare batteries are also welcome.

Do not use alkaline. They cannot provide the amperage necessary for cameras (particularly the flash). The result, is that the battery is killed off (made unusuable) while it retains approximately 80% of it's charge. In fact, many of those alkaline AA batteries that are dead from use in your camera will power your remotes for years to come.

Go with NiMH or Lithiums (or the newer hybrids)

I would check the A95 manual. I have an A70 and I think it will only work with NiMH rechargeables, not lith-ions..

I have a Canon PowerShot A80 and Use Rayovac 15 minute rechargable NiMH 2000mAh.

I've used other rechargable batteries that didn't last nearly as long. These things seem to last forever.

Dave Etchells ran tests on a large number of NiMH batteries. One of the things that surprised me is how consistently Energizer showed up at the top of the pack in terms of watt-hours actually delivered, for every single mAh rating. The tests only go up to 2300mAh, but Energizer now sells 2500mAh, which I expect to be in the top of their category as well. Power-2000 makes 2700mAh batteries, but they weren't tested, and I don't know how well they compare. I use their 2500mAh version in some of my gear without any problems, but I have never tested them against my Energizer 2500s.
