LOL SKip... If you thought NASCAR was cool, wait till you stand less than 7 feet from the headers of a top fueler as it launches!
I have a few drag shots in my portfolio also... somwhere in there. :) |

i don't know how close i'll be able to get, but the virginia IHRA nationals are in the area this weekend!!! i'm still trying to get credentials for that... and the open-wheelers are coming to richmond to test next week (including sam & helio)!

Great shots, don...you caught the raw spirit of the sport well. I know all to well what you mean about standing less than 7 feet from a top fueler as it launches! I have the dubious honour of living next door to Brian Johnson, the former World Champion top fuel biker...and the Imperial Wizard.
Unfortunately Brian has now retired and the Imperial Wizard is burning the rubber in the US of A now.
Keep taking those action shots!! |

Don, I left you a few comments, and wanted to paste one of them here, as some of your shots are absolutely first rate, and many here will NEVER know what it's like being that close.
I've been at these, this close, and I can say is this is an amazing feat to capture one like this.
5,000HP unleashing in a blink of an eye has a way of affecting your body in a way nothing on the planet can. I can only describe it as all bodily sensations cease for a moment, as you cannot hear anything, feel anything, even momentarily stopping breathing, as the roar reaches in and grabs hold of your soul, temporarily suspending your body of all senses. |

Hey guys thanks for your comments!
Brad your comments are right on the mark, it's hard to put into words just how bad these things beat you up when standing that close. The starters sometimes invite drivers to stand with them on the line so they can experience what they go thruogh.
Skip I hope you get your pass, it will be a great followup to your NASCAR gig. |

OMG these bring back the memories of sitting on the line waiting to go fetch Connie Kalitta's car... He'd drive his Caddie up there...Bobbie (who was driving for him at the time) would take off in a huge *cough cough putter* mess of nitro fumes and we'd go pull the car back.. what a riot..Leaning on Don Prudhomme's truck, watching the guys get ready for the next time down.....
It was only one summer... in 1972 but it was a summer to remember
