I was told about a website where someone had made a business of taking photographs of people's belongings for insurance or historical purposes. Anybody ever heard of this kind of business? Would that be very lucrative and what would be a starting price to photograph someone's belongings for their records? Any thoughts on this subject?

I've never heard of that being a business in itself but IIRC, my State Farm agent said that he would send somebody over with a video camera for something like $20.

ya i think that taking video is much more practical because you can just pan across a room and get most of what is inside it rather than taking dozens if not hundreds of pictures. it may be more of an option to people who collect antiques where the picture quality may mean more to catch fine details.

This website showed how they made a booklet for the client with lots of info in it and photos. It looked like it would be more convenient for the client to access than a video. I tried to video different parts of my house as it was being built. It seemed like a great idea at the time but 10 yrs later looking at it, it was ok but not very informative.

By the way the website was called Captured On Camera I believe. If you want to check it out to see what I'm talking about.

Captured on Camera <- link for us lazy types.

Might be worthwhile. With the explosion of digital photography though I imagine it could be a tough sell. There's a company here in the bay area that photographs items for ebay adds. They make their money on volume though.

I thought of the ebay thing too. I think there are still lots of people who are afraid of the digital world or don't want to be involved in buying a camera. I had a job recently where I talked to business owners and police, sheriff's and fire depts, all day and you would be totally amazed at how many of them weren't up on using a computer, scanner,or camera. Then there's my friend who had me shoot photos of his invention for his website and was so impressed by the photos , he bought a camera identical to mine, haha!

Funny thing happened tonight. A friend of my boyfriend wants me to take some "pictures" of their horses to put on the web "circuit" to sale. Said their scanner broke. From talking to him, I believe they are some of the people I mentioned that are still not too familar with the digital world.
So they really do exist and they seek you out!
