as far as the whole democracy/representative thing is concerned.

yes, as a SC we may someday make a decision based on a a significant number of people rather than a majority. I know it will not make a lot of sense to some people.

Hypothetically
We have a poll that says, "Should dpc allow pictures of fruit."

Choices
a) no, no fruit at all
b) some fruit, but no apples or bananas
c) allow any fruit

The results come back that 35% of the people like a and b, but 30% choose c. Now, it is not a majority, but obviously, a lot of people want pictures of fruit, so we would probably be inclined to go with c, even though it was not a majority vote.

I have trained myself not to read signatures or pay them any attention. A signature is no more than a trailer which has nothing to do with what the incipient has just posted. The majority are expressions which when read create a void between the posted message and they rarely have any true connection to the member.

Now, those signatures which change colors and motion are even more disturbing and they really say nothing of substance about the idividual.

Feel free to express yourself and annoy others but please be advise that they do not bother or disturb me because I simply do not acknowledge them. I for one never use stock art of any kind nor do I use stock quotes. When I express myself I do it solely from within and never invite the words of another to support my point.

However, if you feel it important to use quotes, use stock art etc, etc, please feel free to indulge. I am sure there are many that pay them attention.

I have stopped using signatures but I haven't turned others off yet. Personnaly, I think some are cool like a funny quote, a word of wisdom... But then some people really abuse it by posting 3 or more links with graphics. I do find it annoying.

I check pretty much everybody's profiles. When I see a new user in the forum, I don't need no signature / link. I check out the profile. If I find the user's photographs, or his personality interesting, I'll check out whatever links this user gives.

The problem I find, is that just like big coorporations who shove their adds down our throats, a lot of user's are now using the forum as advertisement for their work. I see the forum as a place to discuss and learn from others. In the real world, I would consider it very strange if people kept slipping me business cards after each line of a conversation...

You have brought up an interesting point. I have to agree with this so I have now turned mine off.

What about somebody wearing a badge, or a T-shirt with a logo on while talking to you? Would that seem so strange?

No, but if I had to peel a sticker with that logo off of every form before I signed it, I'd get annoyed.

I don't think your analogy holds, because the badge on someone's shirt generally doesn't have to be read or even looked at in order to conduct the business at hand.

Sigs take up actual scrolling space. If I now have to scroll through six pages of postings, instead of the two pages the actual content takes up, then those sigs are interfering with my use of this site at the expense of advertising something else.

Neither do I, I just like poking fun at bad analogies with equally bad analogies : )

This whole thread is cracking me up because I'm sitting here with signatures switched on and no annoying images, which everybody keeps insisting is currently impossible :P

Don't make me quote muckpond's post.

Won't work. I saw it once. It took 3 clicks to get rid of it for good.

That, and quoting a post doesn't bring the signature with it :P

nodding......
Sometimes it would be very nice to be able to select a user and put them on IGNORE so that you can't see their posts in forums :)

P.S. I never delete or keep the right part when I try to quote from someone else's message! LOL

Haven't checked in on this one for awhile. Let's see how much damage I can do...

Ken, I'm using reference your pics ONLY because we love them so much and people have a tendancy to reuse them over and over again in the same thread.

You know, I was going to just let this thread die a slow death, but since people keep resurrecting it, here are my 2cents:

This is a photography site. People who visit here come to express themselves through photography. I saw a few members with picture signatures and thought they were interesting. I checked on the site and saw that forum code is allowed for the Forum Signature. I happen to love Shay Geared Locomotives. My screen name reflects that. I wished to express myself through my signature and looked for a fitting logo. I have found one. It has movement but nothing that "I" consider to be annoying. I specifically looked for a small size image (8kb 137x75px) If DPC would allow it to be pulled from our local storage, the issue of downloading from another site would be resolved. Since putting up the logo, I have gotten several PM's complimenting it's use. Not a single negative comment. (Although I am expecting a few now! ;-)

If images are so distracting in the forums, why don't we ban images altogether? We would lose a lot of wonderful creativity, (kpriest, strikeslip, immediately come to mind, but there are lots of others!) I love the photos in the forums, and this includes signature photos as well. I immediately know who has posted and recognize the sigs as personalities. If the forums were reduced to text only, I know I would spend a lot less time there. DPC gives you the option of turning off signatures if you don't like to see them, so I guess I don't see the problem. If you aren't interested in a photo insight to my personality, why would you want to look at my links or text signature either?

Maybe an alternate option would be to re-design the site to allow personal avatars, which would be on the left instead of our default blue and greys? Set some limits to avatar kb & pix sizes. Maybe the SC could have something a little larger or a multicolored DPC ribbon as a frame around the avatar. Then limit the signature to 1 line of text or links. By moving the avatar to the left and out of the signature line, you remove the scrolling issue from the equation.

I don't claim to speak for the majority of the people here, I only speak for myself. I am also aware that just changing the way the site is laid out is no easy task.

And yes, I have included my signature & image here for you to enjoy or igore. Your choice.
