currently i use canons software DPP 1.6.1 to work with RAW files. recently i tried RAW Developer 1.2.3 and that works great - but it's only a demo.

my questions are about working with the XT's RAW files:
1.) can i use photoshop cs or cs2 when working with raw files?
2.) what are plugin convertors for? does it have the same effect as working directly on the RAW file?

thanks!

1. Yes, you can work with RAW in CS2

I don't think CS is providing support for the XT, I think you'll need CS2 for that.

is it the SAME as working directly on the RAW files like in DPP?

or does it save it as another image format, like JPEG or TIFF, and then work on the image?

It works with it, you just have to download the update from www.adobe.com But CS2 comes fully compatible with the canon raw files.

The last time I looked, RAW support for the 350 was not available for CS. The is an upgrade for CS2 which has it.
With CS@, you can do a lot with an image before you transfer it from RAW to TIFF or JPEG. You can work with exposure, white balance, even curves, to name but a few.
Good luck with it.

You can also grab Adobe's DNG converter (version 3.1) to create a DNG which can be used as input with CS ACR.

The last update for CS supports:
PowerShot S70
PowerShot G6
EOS-1Ds Mark II

The first update for CS2 supports:
Canon EOS Rebel XT (EOS 350D/EOS Kiss Digital N)
Nikon D2X
Olympus EVOLT E-300
Olympus C-7070 Wide Zoom

sorry... im confused. am i able to manipulate the RAW files just like I do in DPP, or am i not working with the image right off the camera's sensor (i.e.JPEG)

As I understand it, the Raw files are the same as what the Canon 20D uses. Because a new camera model comes out, they don't feel the need to list all previous models in which the CS2 reads. If the XT's Raw file is a *.CR2 it should be encoded the same way.

If not, then I stand corrected.
