My silhouette entry finished in 18th place with a 6.7x, my 3rd-highest score yet. About where it belonged IMO, in a strong challenge.
For those who are interested, here's the unedited original:
I had some tough decisions to make, though; here are some outtakes:
That third one is an extreme Gothic Glow outtake; had I gone with the wide view I'd have taken it in a different direction. And then there's the "other" shot, the one I was tempted to enter instead of "Lone Fisherman";
I've rarely had such a hard time choosing...

You absolutely made the right choice. I left a comment. The others appear too busy or overprocessed - except the gull and reeds, which is very good, but not as interesting.
You could've got Karma to swim out and grab the hook to bend the fishing rod over for an even better shot. :P

Karma was not interested in the job; she was too busy chasing seagulls. But seriously, you made this comment:
"If I wasn't too busy goofing off to leave a comment, it would've been to crop the top a little bit to remove that sliver of bright sky."
I strongly disagree. I think that sliver of bright sky gives the picture "somewhere to go"... I'd be real interested in what others have to say on this.

Ooooohhh, I see how it is. My opinion's not good enough. I'm heading over to the Rant forum to tell you "somewhere to go"
;-)

As I said in my comment during the challenge, I'm with Ken - I think the image would be more balanced without that white sliver. All it does is pull my focus right up and away from the main part of the image and almost out of the frame.

Uh huh, that's what I WANTED. So my question is, how many AGREE with Ken and Kavey (the KK Kids) and how many are in my camp, that this "spirit window" is a plus?

Afraid I agree with the others Robert, on the preview screen if you scroll to cut off the silver the picture looks much better and balanced more evenly leading me to the main subject, in my opinion of course.
Still a great shot with or without.

Um... not meaning to be facetious at all but... why would you WANT to pull people's eyes straight OUT of your photo and on to something else before they have really focused on what is there to be seen in the image itself, such as the fisherman?
Maybe it's because you've attached that emotional idea of a spirit window to the white cloud area which is a significance that is not being found by the average viewer? Don't know, just an idea.

For me, a crop like Artan's is too "pat". I don't much care for images that contain no surprises, no tension, no movement. I like the unexpected, the anonalous, the mildly perturbing element. Which no doubt explains my low average on votes received, LOL.
Thanks to all who've weighed in on this one.

I would agree that the sence of mystery and intrigue adds to many an image, and as 235 people gave you an average score of 6.7 it would seem that most like what you have done with your version.
I sometimes am little mechanical in my visual imagary, Spending my early years at a drafting board, producing engineering drawings by the ream, can have that impact on the eye.

Robert - I really like what you entered for the challenge (as it is) and I agree it must have been a REALLY tough choice (nice to have that problem - eh?).
Having said that, I like this one a LOT, maybe even more...
Great job regardless...some outstanding captures!

I would agree that Ian's suggested crop is too drastic (for my tastes) and it loses much of the openness and expansiveness of the original scene. I'm not sure that including the white area adds movement or tension or even something as strong as mildly peturbing. I think it's more about whether it adds anything at all or leads more to the loss of something. And as with all art, the viewpoins on that are wholly subjective and there will surely be people who think both ways!
:D
