So, I had my Canon S500 in my purse and something must have hit the screen because it is toast. I found this site //photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7839 and it seems that you can just order the LCD screen from Canon and do the repair yourself. What do you think? Too risky or worth it for the cheap cost of repairs? I definitely can't afford to send it in. I want to upgrade to the Canon Rebel XT in a few months so don't want to blow any more money than I need to. But I need a working camera - all of the menu options are displayed on the LCD screen so if I don't have that it is only a point-and-shoot camera, no reveiwing shots or anything! Help! Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks! Emily

If the part is really only $33, plus 1/2 hour labor, then the complete repair should cost <$100 when done by a reputable repair center. If you're mechanically inclined and willing to risk the total loss of the camera, however, it might be an interesting project. I see one poster over there has laid out the steps pretty well, it does not look like there is any really involved disassembly/reassembly.

You can still take pictures in a home setting. Most likely your camera came with RCA cables (yellow, red &/or white) and you can use a tv set to compose a picture. Also a good way to take a self portrait.

Thanks! I had never thought of that... I think I am going to try and fix it too. My husband is a techie so I think he can do it!

just in case anyone cares - it was a successful surgery! Works perfectly! I am so glad we didn't write it off as a total loss!

Congrats! I love it when you can fix something yourself, and not have to pay for it. It gives you a sense of accomplishment.

w00t! Feels good, doesn't it? Just imagine what it would have cost to send it for repairs. Congrats on the sucessful "surgery!"
