For some reason I can not get letters to come up in italics or bold on a thread. I can see how this could be useful when coping text and pasting to show anothers text in your own. What am I doing wrong?

You can get italics, bold, or a combination by nesting the code. Quote this response to see the code. On a side note, strikethrough and underline are also available.
Edit: I've never tried This (bold italic underlined strikethrough, LOL.
