Anyone from this area of the US or been there? Hubby and I will be going to this town or city (embarrassed to say have no idea if it´s a town or city) towards the end of May for a week. I´m really looking forward to this trip because I have never been to the countryside in America only to huge big cities and not really enjoyed that.

If anyone has some suggestions where to go specially to photograph and what tourist traps to avoid I would be really happy.

And also can anyone tell me how long it takes to drive from Chicago to Mishawaka? We will be flying into O´Hare and not really sure if to continue (after a 12 hour flight) and maybe driving in late afternoon or just stay one night in Chicago and continue the next day.

Every little help is appreciated

Mishawaka is about 200km or so from O'Hare. The traffic between O'Hare and Indiana Interstate 80 corridor around the bottom of Lake Michigan is terrible. Try to do it way off-hours. My advice would be to relax for a few hours, maybe take a short nap, and then drive later in the evening.

kirbic is right -- getting out of Chicago to the southeast is kind of a mess. every major thruway was under construction at one point in time last year.

in any event, it's a relatively nice area as far as midwest towns go. you should spend some time at the Indiana Dunes (on the Indiana portion of Lake Michigan) -- that's really pretty. and while you're in South Bend, go to the campus of Notre Dame for a bit.

there are also a number of Amish communities not too far from there. if you can find out more about them and go to one of their market days, that's always a good time.

i'm in indianapolis (about 2 - 2.5 hours due south of where you will be). i can't say i've spent a ton of time in the area, but you should be able to find things to do if you're mobile enough. :)

If you enjoy hiking around and more outdoor activities, you might want to check out Turkey Run State Park. Lots of trails, horseback riding, canoing, etc. there.

Here's a link!

Turkey Run

Are there any kinds of activities that you enjoy in particular?

Thank you so much for this info. I have been Googling some more and came up with some maps. A bit difficult with those miles but my husband will deal with that, hope I get to drive so he will navigate ;)

The park you mentioned ladyhawk22 I cannot find it in conection with South Bend or Mishawaka, is it far away from that area?

Hiking, walking in general, simple scenery, getting to know the locals a little, is what I´m good at. Clubs and fancy places won´t miss me at all.

Any more suggestions?

I live 45 minutes south of Mishawaka. The coolest think to photograph up there are the Amish.

You must eat at //www.essenhaus.com/ The website sucks but the food and atmosphere is amazing.

Any more Q's I'll have an answer for ya. My brother lives up there, so I spend a lot of weekends there. Essenhaus is also a hotel. My family stays there when they visit. The Essenhaus is a great place to start.

MMMMMMMMMMMMM chicken...

If you go to Essenhaus, you might as well spend some time poking around in one of the surrounding Amish towns. Just remember the Amish don't like having their picture taken (something about graven images).

I was wondering about that, they are probably fed up being tourist attraction :(

I have yet to find a place in this world that is boring, and I have been to many :) there is always something nice in every place and having a camera in hand, well you all know the rest..

I will for sure look up Essenhaus for a taste of Amish food. We will be staying at Premiere Vacation Club, part of Varsity Clubs of America. Do any of you know what it's like?

Actually, I believe that it has to do with their faith.
