Here is a package I bought for my G/F. I thought it was pretty good deal. I would like your honest opinion. I pay for it Sunday, and its the only thing I have ever purchased on EBAY, so I am not really worried about ratings and such.
The sellers feedback is real good. So, did I screw up or get a decent deal? |

It seems to me that you could probably walk into a store and buy these things for around the same amount, and not have to pay S&H.

Yeah maybe so. The only stores I know to go into are the big box stores or ritz camera (and they are real high).
I wanted to buy local, and proably should have......I just could not find the same deal.

You purchased about $1075-$1100 worth of camera and lenses. Only you can decide if the other stuff was worth $200 |

I'm not so hot on the deal.
I don't know how much you paid for it though.
The Canon 75-300 is not a good lens at all (it's under $200), the tripod looks very inexpensive about $35. I'm not crazy about mircodrive cards (about $130) as they are slower than a high quality CF card. The cases seem okay but I'm not sure if you need/want it. Currently you can get a Rebel XT kit for under $950 at Newegg.com. so you are paying over $350 for the accessories, but I don't think they are that high in quality.
Generally, you can buy things seperately and get exactly and only what you want and usually pay less.

Weird that you get a Canon 18-55 lens and Sigma 18-55mm lens.
Another thread about how crappy the wide angle lens was this morning.

Well, I can still go to Best Buy and get the camera and lens kit for 1000 bucks.
I had no idea the 75-300 was not a good lens.
Oh well, looks like I need to rethink this deal.
And I dont need some of the "junk" in the deal.

The Rebel XT kit is a nice enough gift.
Just get that. As her experience grows, she or you can slowly buy exactly the accessories you want. One thing I didn't like about the deal was the tripod. It looked very cheap and trust me, you don't want a cheap tripod. You'd never want it to tip over. Yes, the 75-300 is a bad lens. I wouldn't recommend it.

I think it is a reasonabley good price if the accessories included are what you wanted. Hard case and carrying case seem a little redundant. A microdrive is not as fast writing as a high speed card but 2 gig is plenty of capacity. A card reader is handy, can't go wrong on that item. You may want higher quality lenses after a while but those two cover a wide and useful range. I like being able to pay with a credit card over the phone instead of using PayPal, but beware that they may try to sell you additional items at high prices. The only things I can think of that you may want besides what's in the package are an extended warranty and a spare battery. B&H has both, a Canon brand battery for $50 and a 5 yr Mack warranty for $90, so don't pay more than that. I think you did OK.
BTW, a 98.2 is only a moderate feedback rating on ebay so I'd review the comments left by other customers carefully.

Great points, I dont need a tripod, I dont need a hard case.
Okay, I think you guys have convinced me, and I have not paid for it. So I will go in a different direction...buying locally and getting what I really need.
Thanks so much for being honest. |

To give you an idea of value, Dell was selling silver 350XT kits this week for around $750. I paid $719 on a dell preferred account with shipping.
If you paid the $1299, and you can get out of it, that would be a good thing. The silver 350XTs aren't as hard to get as the black ones, and they thus seem to be easier to find discounts.
In my opinion, you could go with finding a silver body only, and you'd be fine. The kit lens isn't worth paying for. Spend $250, or less, and get the Sigma 18-125 instead. That's a nice walk around range for a good price, and the Sigma is very sharp and reasonably compact (and has a very good closeup mode). Add a second battery, you can get a good deal at battery barn, about $22. $89 for a Sandisk Ultra 1 GB card.
Add a Slik tripod, a case, and your still under $1100 or at least under $1200 depending on cost of the case and which tripod.
Just food for thought.
