Here are a few shots I took today of some plates I designed for a catering company that I used to work with. They're being used to set up a tasting menu for a 600 person corporate tent party so there's nothing too complicated but they still look tasty. I just happened to drop by and say hello, so I got recruited to plate and shoot and had under an hour to do all 10 plates and get the pix off to the client.
I still need to buy lighting and a softbox. I was wondering if a simple flash/softbox set-up will do the trick? Halogen?
also what's the best inexpensive tripod you can buy. I have a Velbon DF 50 which is a total piece of crapola. Fixing that is first on my list.

They look good, pawdrix - could use better lighting - I would think a simple setup would work ok.
I'll shoot some examples of how I would shoot them if you send me like 5 or 6 plates of each and I'll send you back pictures like this:

Look for a Bogen Manfrotto 3011BN Tripod with 322RC Grip Ballhead ($204, you won't regret it) and Alienbees monolights. Enough chitchat... please pass the shrimp. ;-) |

The main theme in food photography is shallow DOF.

Photobucket is a bit slow today, but these are a few of my food shots I took in March. They'll load eventually...
edit: Used my 50 1.8 and one of my Alienbees B800's set on 1/32 power. With depth that shallow it's easy to blow out the highlights. I even had another blanket draped over the softbox for even less light for part of the shoot. BTW, aced the photo class, my prof was blown away by my work.

For food photography, a fast macro lens is best, and halogen should work fine. The more diffused the better. For shallow depth, a wider aperture is needed, so lights need not be strong. If your lights are still too strong, you should use a neutral density filter. Halogen will work just as well as flash in food photography--you're subject is stationary and won't be squinting or sweating from the light and heat.

Got it. Maybe I'll take the plunge and spend...spend...spend.
I would have loved to have had my 50mm 1.8 and some daylight but these dudes work in factory like, commisary with all the charm of a cinderblock. The weather was crappy too, so I had no room or time to play. Plate, shoot and go. It was a fantastic experience since the real world requires speed and accuracy. They didn't expect much and what I did was better than what they normally send out.
Here's a Pecan Crusted Tournado of Beef over Potato Hash(potato, oinion, sundried tomato and olives)with a Blackberry Sauce and Vegetable Batons.
Bad shot....great dish!

Moist foods may "sweat" under hot lights, and things which are supposed to look frosty-cold will have the condensation evaporate. I think most food stylists use drops of glycerine in place of the water to avoid this.
Of course, this advice comes from an expert food stylist : )

Oh, good point. I hadn't thought of these situations. I think if the lights are well diffused the direct heat shouldn't be a problem, but just since I bought and own them, I always use my Alienbees :)
