I'm looking for a decent camera to carry in my pocket while walking around bad neighborhoods and other places where it would not be ideal to carry my Digital Rebel along. I'd like something that will not break from getting bumped around occasionally. I'm looking to spend around $150-250.

I kinda like the Nikon Coolpix 3500 for this purpose. The Canon Digital Elph series is a nice size, but they seem a little fragile and I'd rather not have a protruding lens. The Coolpix S1 seems perfect but maybe overkill for my purpose. Also considering the Dimage X. Does anyone have experience with any of these or any other recommendations?

Thanks!

I've put over 10,000 exposures through my Nikon Coolpix 4500 and it is still going strong. The buttons have all worn down to black, but I know the buttons by heart now. :) The 4500 is definitely rugged and well worth a look.

The Pentax WR cameras are water and dust resistant, have no external moving parts, and seem to be nothing short of rather rugged. Also, they are tiny and just right for a pocket.

Look into the Canon SD10 or SD20, I have the SD10 and take it with me jogging or to the mall. Unbelievable color from a tiny rugged camera.

the Minolta S414 is oldish but rugged as hell.

the down side is it eats batteries. but it is right in your price range and is a great little(ish) camera for art and other fun shots on the go.....
it has a very good manual function which most cameras don't have when u get to the point and shoot rang.
also it meets your price point at 199.99 and is 4 megapixels

I recently got a Canon A85. Fully controlable, uses AA batteries. It's a bit on the bulky side, but travels well in jacket pockets and bags. It's got a good feel to it and had handled my rough handling.

I bought one of the new Canons for my dad recently - that takes SD cards. It was like a 520 or something? It's smaller, but it seems a lot less sturdy.

Thank you very much for the suggestions! I will definitely look into these.

I have a Pentax Optio 33WR, which is their water-resistant camera with rubber corners, etc. They have newer WR models too, which you might like to look at.

Canon has some SD memory cameras that are pretty small... the SD200, 300, 400 and 500 I think. They have optical zoom and a nice movie mode, I think I'll buy the 400 for myself before long.

Matt, I bought Karen the Canon PowerShot S500 in Feb. 5 Mega pixels, 36-108 mm zoom. She carries it everywhere with her in her purse. Also takes 640x480 avi's if you're looking for short movies. It is sometimes fun to have that capability. It's a pretty nice camera. I use it occasionally when I don't have my Nikon with me. If I didn't want the extra capabilities of a DSLR, this would probably be at the top of my list. Bonus that it uses CF cards so you can swap with your Rebel. Most of the newer "pocket cams" seem to use SD. Let me know what you decide on.
