I'd recommend that you get a Speedlight 580EX with lightsource shade thingy. Wow...what an amazing difference that makes! |

I have the kit 18-55 and the Canon 28-135 IS. There is a big differnce between the 18 (17)mm and 28mm. Remember with a 1.6 crop factor, a 18mm is 28mm in a 35mm format and a 28mm becomes close to a 50mm. So hence going from a 28mm to a 18mm focal length on a dSLR is like going from a standard 50mm focal lenght to a common wide angle 28mm on a film camera. When I use the kit lens at 18 vs the 28-135 at 28, there is quite a noticible difference in your ability to compose shots. With the Tokina 12-24, which I have, I often look through the viewfinder and have to really get close (I'd say too close) to the subject to fill the frame with them. And you know how people look when you get close to them with an ultrawide lens. It may be mainly useful for a large group shot in wedding situations, nothing more. The 17-35, you can probably do group shots and get close for a portrait with out being too close at 35mm.

I find that my 17-35 f:2.8-4 is on my camera most of the time. This shot of my Alfa, was taken at 17MM f:9 and 1/125, and only about three feet from the front headlight. It is also very nice to be able to get group shots without going across the street to do it. Minimal distortion and check out the DOF. All at about $300.

Anyone have eny experience with the Sigam 18-50 2.8?
It is in my price range and the constant 2.8 and the stretch to 50mm seems pretty good. The reveiws i am finding end up favorable, but pont out issues, like focusing.
