I use Tiffen filters and have had good luck with them. As for traveling, if you are going for extended periods of time you might want to look at portable hard drives. I have one with a 20 gig drive and you can fit LOTS of pics on it.

Is there any way to transfer images "directly" from a Canon 20D to a hard drive?

I would think such would be technically "feasible" by now...and silly if one can't.

My portable drive has a memory card slot so I just put the card in and store them. Then while that happens I shot on my second card.

If you have a sensor cleaning kit, bring it along. You never know if you're going to get dust on your sensor while travelling. Would be a shame to come back home and have once in a lifetime shots ruined by dust spots.

A small notepad and pen to jot down notes isn't a bad idea either.

Well I can at least reccomend ND filters from B+W, have served me well in the past. My billboards entry and free study VII are shot with B+W ND filters.

I also have a portable hard drive and wouldn't leave on a trip without it.

I also must take along:
user manual
lens hood
extra battery
battery charger
air bulb and lens cloth
shower cap (from a hotel) handy for improvised wet weather gear
...and lots of other things I could probably leave at home (according to my husband, but then, he's not carrying my photo pack, is he?)

We're leave soon for a 2 week trip to France and I'm bringing EVERYTHING!

You also have to be careful and make sure you gear goes by as "in congnito" as possible. I changed my camera strap to a plain black one so as not to attract potential pickpockets seeing the nice yellow NIKON letters!

I also have a Flashtrax portable storage which is very handy considering that I now only shoot in RAW.

If you want threaded filters I would suggest hoya, If you want a
little more control of the filters I would suggest a cokin p filter
holder using high tech filters.

If I were you I would still consider the portable hard drive!
They are incredibly useful!

I agree, seriously consider the portable hard drive. The laptop may suffice if it has enough memory, but you'll also need to consider the type of electricity they have and your ability to recharge anything you take.

As for the 4 512 cards, it's a good start, but I can fill one of those per day...easily...when traveling.

Another option may be online storage if you'll have access to the internet--but then I know next to nothing about such things. Others know anything about these services?

For insurance, have your Dad check with the company that holds his homeowner's policy. My understanding is that it's quite reasonable to add traveler's insurance for equipment.

Thiefs. Get street smart, soon. Know where you are at all times. Act like you know where you're going even if you don't. Keep an eye out for safe places when you're out shooting....nearby hotel lobbies, shops, places with people, places with security/police, etc. Go out with someone as much as possible. Don't even think about going down that dark alley no matter how great the shot will be. Learn some helpful phrases in Spanish. Disguise your equipment as much as possible. Wear a light jacket and tuck your camera inside when you're walking around. And make eye contact with strangers (in a non-menacing way)--theives are looking for easy targets--don't be an easy target--let them know you are aware of their presence. And remember, theives are still a small minority of the population--most of the people you'll meet/see are just as honest and upright as you are.

I got a rider on my home insurance policy to cover my camera equipment. I have all my gear insured and it costs roughly $100 CAD/year. It covers:

- theft
- loss (oops... forgot the camera at the bar! )
- even damage (i.e. dropped lens, camera falls into water, llama pooping in your camera bag )

I would strongly recommend it since our equipment is so expensive to replace.

A battery grip mounts to teh bottom of the camera and holds 2 camera batteries. thus it extends the amout of time you can shoot without changing batteries. It also gives you another shutter button taht can be used when hlding hte camera in portrait mode.

"buzzmom" recently posted a link for a portable CD burner which looked so good that I promptly ordered one. She is very happy with hers.
