james balog, his book on endangered wildlife is incredible, its
called 'survivors'.

Yep, admirable work. The Aceh descriptions was touching. I've heard the same from friends who were covering the early days of the tsunami. Some had seen corpses, death and war, but they couldn't shake the fact that they shoot or write about death all day, and then go to sleep surrounded by more corpses. At one point, 2,000 people shared a mosque, two toilets, because there was nothing else around.
It's too sad that some things that make "great photography" are so horrific.
