When I bought my 20d in March, I ended up lending my old Canon G3 to my partner's father on an indefinite basis. He's never had a digital cam before, and had been using the same SLR for the last 15 years. One of his concerns was that he'd not be able to download images onto his computer, and be able to do post-shot processing on them.
He's NOT computer illiterate, but at the same time, he's not the most comfortable person with computers and newer technology. Unfortunately, he lives in Australia while I'm in Sri Lanka, and he doesn't feel comfortable asking someone geographically closer to him to help out.
He's had the camera for three months now, and hasn't personally downloaded images, and instead taking the kit to a photo shop in the neighborhood where the technician would download and transfer to a CD for about US$7 per turn.
I'm trying to figure out ways of helping him overcome a bit of the shyness with downloading, cataloging, etc. I figure he'd take many more shots than he has been if there's no cost to him for the processing part of it. Could any of you make suggestions on this issue? Have you had to deal with this yourself and can share some lessons that have been learned? Thanks.

Is the problem getting them onto the computer or post processing the images??? If all he wants to do is put the on the computer then get him a card reader on go thru msn messenger and install the G3 diver from canon's website.

We leant our old Minolta Dimage 7i to my mum and it took some patience to teach her how to download images, reformat the card, save the images etc. And I live close enough that I can visit/ talk to her on the phone while she's doing it. I have no clever ideas for how to do this when you're so far apart. I'm not even thinking about teaching her any postprocessing!
It's a shame your dad won't turn to anyone local for some informal lessons?

If I was to do the same thing for my mother then I'd make sure that she had Picasa installed, it detects when the camera is attached and asks nicely if you want to transfer them, and it's an attractive, easy interface. Additionally installing Hello works alongside perfectly, allowing you both to share and discuss images online.

(I am assuming a connection to the internet exists)

Thanks all for the inputs. I think I might try the Picasa and Hello approach.
