More of a close-up than a true macro, but it's kind of an interesting flower. I don't know what it is though, any ideas?

Marc, I just played with your interesting flower in PS (CS2).
It is a lovely subject for applying artistic filters, there were several that I liked a lot.

A big bee, slightly too sharp perhaps.

What's the dividing line between a close-up and a macro?

Where does this guy fall?

By definition, macrophotography is where the recorded image is life-size or larger. In film, this would mean if you overlaid the negative on the object, there would 1:1 or greater correspondence. I'm not sure what the relevance of this is to sensors, however. How big is the image, really? Depends on the screen resolution you view it at. I'm not sure how much it matters, but the frog shot "looks" more like closeup than macro anyway.

I thought macros had to contain insects or flowers or coins. ;-)

since spring hasn't reached Iceland yet, there are very limited resources for flower macros here.

so I just let this little fellow come in stead of flowers :)

Macro is generally achieved with a special lens or with an in-camera setting. Most cameras with on-board macro have two macro capabilities. One setting is for full wide angled where the camera has to be very close (mine within 2 inches) to the subject to be in focus. The other is full telephoto where the subject is further away.

Here are two examples using my Sony F-717 camera:

Full wide-angle Macro:

I was within two inches when taking this photograph. I got muddy laying on the ground. :)

Full Telephoto Macro:

I was about 18 inches away from the main subject.

BTW, in accordance with the thread theme being recent macros, both images were taken this month. :)

This one was my first attempted macro with this lens (the new Canon EF-S 17-85). To be honest, I was doubtful that it would do much. But after I looked at it on my monitor, I was impressed.

It didn't do so well in the challenge... but that's probably because the picture itself lacks some "pizazz" and maybe because people didn't associate it to well to triangles. That's okay, it is still fairly impressive as a macro shot.

Some day I'm going to get a "real" macro lens. Trouble is... macro lenses won't pay the bills. :-)
