I don't think anyone's saying you must not include mistakes in your titles. Some us are just being honest enough to step forward and say that it does have an impact on our judgement of the overall package presented to us. Even those who don't realise that it does may well be subconsiously taking it into account in their overall opinion. As someone who loves using the French language but is aware how many mistakes she makes in it, I sympathise with those who have reasons for finding it more difficult than others to write in English. But I can't lie and say that a poorly spelled title has no impact on me at all.
The entire voting process is subjective so calling people anal and insulting them for the way they form their opinion just doesn't strike me as very useful.

Quite right.
I should add that bad English is absolutely excusable, and won't affect how I vote on a photo. But bad spelling takes seconds to check, and is just about showing attention to detail. Photography is all about presenting a visual image and creating an impression, why is your title any different? Bad grammar is excusable though, it can't be checked by computer.
And I really couldn't care less about spelling in forums, I make plenty of mistakes because I type quickly. Nobody cares about that.

If a person is in Japan, has a spelling or grammar error in their entry there is a good chance that he is not going to catch it. Once it's pointed out to him, odds are he would want to correct it. But due to the nature of DPC, he can't.

Actually, yeah there is a way...
Pull the submission and start from scratch. Upload the same pic, retype the title with the correct spelling.
Just another way for me to display my "anal" nature. Actually, could SC please change my username to "anal_rgo" please?

PS That last bit is meant as a not-fo-sunny joke. :)

Clara first you haven't offended me in any way. As far as forums go this is in my mind and informal conversation so spelling here doesn't matter. As far as titles go I don't count off for that but people need to remember that that is part of your permanent record. As far as where I quoted you above you have until voting starts to change it.

Edit to state that you can change just the title before voting starts. I know this because I have done it.

Not if you are submitting your entry at 11:59 on Sunday. :) Everyone at some point in time has done something last minute. DPC is no different. It's not an excuse for carelessness. But things do happen.

You don't even need to go that far. Just retype the title and click Update.

I'm stressing that I was kidding. Please, no change to my username. Thank you.

Signed,

Clara, not offence taken here. I don't take offence easily (though when I do the offender can generally tell ;o) and I enjoy being able to discuss opinions without it being considered a conflict!

OK Swinging; I've identified your picture, now I need some help please because I don't know how to score a big fat zero - 1 is the lowest on my voting slip, will that do?
05/18/2005 10:13:14 AM · #36
I did it!!! I told you that you misspelled your title. But guess what?? I did not knock your score down because of it. But, you know what? Others might because they now know which photo is yours. And I think some are fed up with this post that should have been in the RANT forum.
When I wrote the comment, I just thought you might want to know so that if you got low scores, you could be aware that it may help if NEXT time you use a spellchecker. This is a competition and you want everything to be it's best because you never know what people may mark you down for. I got marked down for a shadow BEHIND my subject (there are like 8 but 1 in particular annoyed one of the voters -- whatever -- that is what these competitions are about). Now ask yourself what you can learn from it. And if there is one thing I have learned from this site is not to think so highly of yourself. There may be other reasons why you were marked down. If a lot of people told you about it, then you need to realize that a lot of people look at the title.

We also have users on this site who are color blind, users whose vision is not 20/20, etc. We aren't expected to take this into account when we judge their photos; why are we to make exceptions for titles? I'm not talking about forum posts, I'm talking about a 1-5 word title. If you're going to present something to someone (or many someones) to judge, it's your responsibility to present it well, regardless of what it takes (2 seconds to type it or 20 minutes to look it up in the dictionary). And if you're going to present something for feedback, you can't pick and choose which part of the package you want feedback on and which you should just be excused for.

Well said.

This is an English Language web site, if it was Spanish or French or whatever.... I for one (Laurie for another) would make sure that what we were putting in as a title was proper English. Its not hard to come to DPCFanatics or anywhere else that would help the person spell a word properly. There is also Babelfish that would help.

to whom ever cares...

just pass by my pix...

don't acknowledge it at all...

don't vote on it at all...

I wanted the world to know that is why I started this thread....

I want my work to be perfect, if it is not, so be it.......

no apologies on my part, none expected from whom ever....

I officially am out of this contest, and will make damn sure the next one meets criteria.

exactly. And if you can't come here to have fun, learn and take the good with the bad then maybe you shouldn't be here.

Seriously...don't you think you are taking this all just a tad to seriously. I've mispelled a title in the past too, oh well, one challenge, one photo, live and learn, just make sure to double check it next time, don't be so hard on yourself, striving for excellence is one thing but torturing yourself over one typo is a little extreme in my opinion.

the majority of comment I have had on the pix has dealt with the title being wrong.

mainly from members that have not been on this thread.

how can I tell if the picture is bad now? when the majority of the comments are focused on the title, and not the weakness, or strength of the pix.

not overreacting, ( maybe a little), but seriously, how can I determine the actual score of the submission when all people are focused on is the misspelling?

If you feel that is the case, wait out the voting, and when it is over post your pic in the forums and ask for a critique here if all of the comments you are receiving are focusing on the title, the maybe you could get more comments on the merit of the photo itself? Just a thought...

If you are that worried about it then request validation on your own photo and don't submit the original. It will then be DQ'ed. You will have a dq on the record though and SC will probably kick me in the butt for suggesting.

I don't know if this is apple or silhouette challenge but there is still time left for comments, it's early yet.

Given the rant we've had so far on this thread and taking into account that I'm annoyed with it but am feeling I should be constructive: I'd say chill, turn off your score, don't look at comments for a week, and focus on your 70-hour a week job this coming week :) It'll lower your blood pressure.

Given the rant we've had so far on this thread and taking into account that I'm annoyed with it, and I'm not feeling charitable: Before you submit to the next challenge, do make sure to check your ego at the door.

It's one shot. You get a bad score, well, that's too bad. Does it matter if the low score is because of the title that was mis-spelled? I don't think so. If your ego can't deal with it, and stay on the sidelines. Or spellcheck next time :)

I personally enjoyed the brown ribbon I got a few weeks back. That was actually somewhat "fun."

;-)
