I've occassionally seen seagulls stick their legs up....but most of the time it's because they're short one limb.
Of course, this is coming from a girl who lives in Illinois....so some coastal person might have a better answer. |

I live in Florida. I've seen them tuck their legs many times. Have found myself feeling sorry for the poor creature, only to have it produce the second leg and chase after something to eat. |

my parrot, when he sleeps on his perch, sleeps balanced on one leg. Other days, he sleeps in his 'happy hut' and sleeps sitting down-ish.

Since you are in Ohio I can only assume you aren't near a sea so I think this is probably not a sea gull but the less popular bay gull...get it bagel ha ha...ok sorry, I'm leaving now. btw yes most birds can and will stand on one leg.

Birds do that to preserve body heat.
Well most do anyway:

I know the Great Grey Owls when they were about would usually grab hold of tree limbs with just one leg!

For what it's worth, there's a very high percentage of one-legged seagulls. They get attacked by fish, and lose a leg. We see it all the time on the fishing boats. That said, yes, it's tru they'll also stand on one leg a lot. As Brad said, it's to preserve body heat: the legs don't have any insulation. They stand one-legged more when it's cold than when it's warm.

I also have seen that on repeated occasions. What is really sad to see is when they lose both legs and have to manoeuvre around in those tiny wheelchairs. It is heartbreaking to see them trying so valiantly to go up the icy slopes during those cold, cold Canadian winters. Almost brings me to tears just thinking about it....hehehehehee

If you saw it hop around on one leg, then it has only one leg.
If you see one flying with one leg sticking out, then it only has one leg.
If it is just sitting there, then you can't be sure, so wait to see if it does one of the above.

I do feel for Karma... poor thing. But you might consider getting her one of those seagulls as a companion. They can fly I know, but only if they throw themselves off of a pier or a building.... otherwise their wingtips get all frayed from the pounding on the ground when they first try to take off, and often ... sadly... the loss of feathers that ensues...makes their flight ever so erratic ...that they are prone to crashing into the sides of buildings and the like. (hehehehehehe)
