Please let me know what I could have done better. Cloning that leaf is one thing, for example.

What strikes me about that image is the lighting. Your subject is in shade on a bright sunlight day. Theoretically, Partial metering would give a better result than Evaluative. And some fill flash would help balance out the backlighting. That's assuming you don't mind flashing animals, some people do. And moving to a higher ISO would have allowed for more depth of field to bring more of the squirel's body into focus.

But you don't always have time to think about such things and make adjustments when doing what is basically an animal candid. I think you captured it fairly well considering. The focus is sharp and in the right place, his face and eyes. Removing the leaf would be nice but constructing an ear is not the easiest of cloning tasks, lol.

Thank you Harvey.
I thought about the flash, then I realized I didn't have it on me. Only now I realized that I could have used the on-camera one... Regarding flash on animals, I use flash on my kids sometimes, so I don't see the problem with an occasional squrrel or a bird. I agree with the eval metering. It is just that I am not at the level yet where I can effortlessly apply my 'vast' theoretical konwledge in real life situations:-)

I tried reconstructing an ear, it didn't work quite right. I may try again once I have more time...

Also, bump for the day people (or night people overseas)

ask and you shall recieve....

personally i would have asked the subject to lighten up a bit....he/she looks a bit too serious...maybe some mood music next time...

i think he/she is adorable....and yeah ditch the leaf

Neither an I, lol. Point is you got the shot, you captured the moment of that little guy with his attitude-packed look intruding on your coffee break with your wife.
