Here is my situation. I have RawShotter essentials 2005 since PS/CS does not support the 350D CR2 files. I am new to using RAW but can see a big difference in adjustments that can be made in RSE2005 than taking pictures in 8bit Jpg. But I have no understanding to all the sliders. Can anyone give me a tip or two? Is it was you see is what you get? The reason I ask is when I adjust in RSE2005 and think it looks good I save as Tiff and open in PS/CS but some functions are not available and the editing process renders different results, mostly negative. I'm at a loss and about to give up and go back to jpg. Help!

I have some similar questions myself... I would really like to see a levels option in my raw editor. Is there one that has this? The expo correction doesn't seem to shift data it seems to stretch it, and i'm not used to these settings at all.

SD: RSE should be set to adobe RGB for your output file. You will need to open the file in photoshop with the correct color profile to maintain matching colors like you saw in RSE. After you get it into photoshop and see the colors correctly you can use save for web in order to make the jpg files look the same as they should. I believe it converts to sRBG to do this.

also i believe it has a setting to export directly to sRBG but i don't think it worked correctly for me.

In Camera Raw it works as follows, don't know if RSE is same:

Exposure slider changes white clipping point/ endpoint.
Shadow slider changes black clipping point/ endpoint.
The Brightness slider adjusts the midpoint.
The Contrast slider applies an S curve around the midpoint set by Brightness, darkening those pixels below the midpoint and lightening those above, without affecting the endpoints.

Capture 1 has a levels option. I've never used RSE. But if some PS functions aren't available when you open a file, it's probably saved as a 16-bit file and needs to be converted to 8-bits/color to use all the functions. Saving in 16-bit mode is a good idea if you will make further tweaks to levels or curves in PS, but it may just waste space if you do all that in your RAW converter.

If the photo looks different in PS than it did in the RAW converter, the problem probably has something with color profiles.

I think Camera Raw now does support your camera.

No. Photoshop CS does not but Photoshop CS2 does. After upgrading from PS7 to CS I am upset to find out that now I have to have CS2 to get the RAW update for the 350D.

I recently got an email saying Camera Raw now supports 350D, but I was just reading it on the Adobe website. Looks like they want everyone to upgrade.

Scott, when you go from RSE to CS the file is a 16 bit TIFF. There are limits in CS as to what functions work in 16 bit mode. That's why you have some menu options grayed.

After you've adjusted all the colors and levels and curves, and even applied neatimage or anything you want to do that works in 16 bit mode, you can go to 8 bit mode on the "image" menu, "mode->8 bits".

My PS CS2 supports CR2 files. Maybe an upgrade is due?

Bibble has both curves and levels... In many cases you can be more precise with curves than with levels, but curves take a bit of getting used to where levels are pretty intuitive. Either way, you should not have to suffer through life with a raw converter that doesn't have levels.

Why don't you just convert your CR2's to DNG and use the DNG in CS ACR?
