this lens is very fun, and I promise to use it's razor thin DOF only for good - well I'll try, accidents do happen.

And what lens might that be?

Very nice. Mine is on its way. Maybe tomorrow?...

It's still amazing to me that the 50mm at 1.8 usually has more dof than my 80-200 at 200 with 2.8. I can't imagine the dof of the 400L at 2.8!

Sorry, it's a Nikkor 50mm 1.8 D - best hundred bucks I ever spent

It is nice to see the 50mm shota.

I'm mostly a Nikkor shooter (I have the 50 f1.8D also), but my mouth is watering for the new Sigma 30mm f1.4. I've been checking B&H's website every day since I heard about it.

DOF will probably not any less than the 50 f1.8, but talk about the ultimate low light carry round lens.

Sounds interesting. Got any idea how much it will sell for?

You should also look at the Nikkor 28mm f1.4D. I own this lens and it is an amazing piece of glass. I also have the 85mm f1.4D, which is equally fast and just as impressive optically, although pushing the focal length longer compared to the width of the 28mm.

D'oh... $449 @ Adorama (shipping May 2005)

digitalknight, was that $100 new? And where did you purchase it?

I've shot with the 28 1.8D (love the finish. I wish my 12-24 had it) and I own the older ai manual focus version of the 85 1.4D, but those, while word-class lenses, are also really large and heavy lenses.

I wish Nikon would update one of my favorite lenses of all time the 35 f1.4ais to an AF or a P version.

What I'm excited about besides the speed is it̢۪s really lightweight and size. A lens I could keep on a camera in the glove box or in a jacket pocket.

I was thinking about picking up a D50 and the 30 f1.4, but the lack of DOF preview and no compact flash support will probably spoil that deal.

Finally got my 50mm 1.8 yesterday! I'm going to play with it tonight to see what I can come up with for an Apple entry...

You'll have to post some outtakes or other pictures with your new toy.

Here's one of some weeds I'm attempting to get rid of in my back yard :)

The DOF at 1.8 is indeed REALLY tight. It's nearly impossible to get anything in focus, especially with a slight breeze, wide open:
