I can't speak to the lens itself, but I am somewhat disturbed by the price at the auction site. Unless I mis-interpret something here, you can get the same lens new for half that price at Amazon.
Amazon: Canon 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens

Stupid me! I just saw the auction was in Australian Dollars...

Canon EF EOS 50mm f/1.8 II lens?

Look at this...
lens review

and then... look at this...
B&H price

As you can see, it's a great value lens, but the AUS$165 starting bid price at trademe is just a big, huge joke.

165 Australian Dollar = 126.390 US Dollar. You can get this lens for US$80 at most at reputable dealers.
Good luck.

Thanks guys, will check out the price further. It could be a bit different cos I'm in NZ and not sure how the $$$$ compares

I do think it's a great value lens...can't stress that enough I think.

Thankyou. As you can see, at the present I don't have a lot to choose from, and on a limited budget, this one's more affordable.

After all, isn't it the second most popular Canon lens on this site ?

I bought it myself a couple of weeks ago, and I think it's a very good lens for the price.

The 50 1.8 is sharp and fast and cheap. I bought it last year, and have ordered the more expensive version, the 50 1.4 USM.

I just read about the Sigma 30mm 1.4 HSM. Anyone have that? The 50 is a great lens for the money, but 50 is pretty long on a 1.6 camera for general purpose indoor use!

Go to B & H, you can buy about two for $175. If you want a 50mm prime, it's probably the most bang for the bucks.
