I haven't voted on them all but frmo a quick look, I think each and every photo has a triangle at it.
Not all are key elements, but this is quite a subjective thing, wouldn't you say?
I bet you wouldn't think my triangles are key elements in the photo but it's all about the point of view.
well, I admit this looks like it's going to be my all-time lowest score, but I still have triangles as key elemens. |

What I'm talking about are titles used as detailed instructions to find the triangle that is supposed to be "shown as a key element". |

I've also noticed that some people seem to have forgotten that the challenge description states "This may be a triangular object, or a group of items forming a triangle." Oh well.

I do sound like I'm turning into those "challenge link" hardcore defenders that I've criticized often before. It's just that my picture definitely respects in all the way the theme and instructions that we we're given, plus it's actually amazing in every way (f. modesty !) Still, it's ranking a lot lower than I think it deserves. At least I'm doing better in Dreams.

To me (MO) a key element is a part of the story the image is telling. If the triangle is just there and doesn't appear to be part of the story then the composition is not working for me. This, of course, is subjective.

...and while I'm at it, I'll confess, that does affect the way I'm scoring this challenge. For the first time, I've found myself tending to compare my picture with the ones I'm voting on and establishing my votes based on the score that I have.
Of course, since I'm not done seing them all... Those scores will be adjusted through out the week to my usual fair standards... |

I know where you are coming from. In one of my earlier challenges, my photo was getting very poor numbers and comments. I thought it was a pretty good photo. I began to get more critical about the photo's I was scoring and commenting on as my score got worse. A response back from another member asking me what I meant by "snapshot" in my comment on their photo hit me upside the head with a brick! After taking a "real look" at the photo in question, it was a well composed, well thought out shot. I apologized for my comments, changed them, and went back and re-scored the entire challenge. Since that time, I have honestly tried to vote fairly and give constructive observations about the photos I comment on. It isn't always easy to do when your own photo is bombing, but it is the right thing to do.

Ok... A lot of people use angles that, if they would be cropped ok, they would form triangles, but instead, they create quadrangles because they let the bottom come from the left or right corner of the frame (sometimes both creating then a pentagon). I don't know if anybody follows me... It's not like I could use one as an example...
Maybe I'm being anal retentive... But you won't sell me quandrangle if I'm shopping for a triangle. The theme is so basic and strong, I don't give it as much latitude on the interpretation as I would for other challenges either.

I have the opposite problem - a commenter gave me a four because, on her reading of my title she thought that I was referring to an implied triangle, and said that I should have focussed on all the obvious triangles in my pic.
So: for me, the obvious triangles in the photo are being disregarded because, on one reading of my (multiple level) title, the title is being given precedence and my triangles in the photo do not fit one feature of triangles alluded to in my title.
Not sure this makes sense, but it is definitely frustrating. |
I try not to look at the titles when voting. Since I know what the challenge is I should be able to see it in the photo.

I personnally like titles. Some of them are pretty funny and maybe give me a different point of view on an otherwise ordinary looking photo. The photo my be technically good but sometimes the title just makes it pop a little more. |

I do like titles too. But they should be a complement to the picture, not an instruction or an excuse for a so-so photograph to belong in the challenge. Some people here are brilliant for finding cool creative titles. Some others... Ugh!

I usually try to judge the photo without the title. When I have a number in mind, I read the title. If it is particularly catchy or makes me laugh, I may bump up by 1 point. I don't think I have ever taken away for a title.
When I submit, I try to make the title interesting or humerus. I know that other people take the title into account when scoring.

That is a valid point. However, right or wrong, I only consider what is within the frame when I place a value on a photograph. The title is insignificant and is often only useful to the photographer. I definitely do not think that it should save a photo. |

I agree with grandmarginal and I agree with docurrie and 2shay and kaizen.... each of you make good sense statements.
I also see vage representations of triangles and tiny insignificant triangles that are only there to qualify an image and then some really pretty good stuff. the challenge is quite specific this time "key element" which should mean "significant to the image element".
An Image should stand on its own, the title is only supposed to be like an "identifier" which for all intents and purposes could be a number. I really pay little attention to a title, usually as an afterthought or curiousity... |

Although my score is not that good so far, I am still pleased to see I am staying above a 4 as this is my first challenge.

So far the comments that have been left are exactly what I expected. I knew the shot was a bit over-exposed, but did not get a chance to repeat it. I corrected it as much as possible , but once over-exposed your stuck. As for being a bit fuzzy....well I'm not sure what happened there. The original is very clear. But, when I made it smaller to fit the allowable dimensions, I lost sharpness. Makes no sense to me. Guess I will have to remember to double check that before I submit, and to not submit when I am struggling to stay awake.
I can see where I will be able to learn a lot from this site.

Go to the tutorials page and use the instructions for preparing your image for submission. It is very good and will help you with the sharpness issue. |

i look at the title out of pure curiousity! i will look at the title faster if i dont see the subject( or im confused as to what the subject is) such as in the minimalism challenge.I think a title is important for photos because it sometimes helps the viewer understand the photo. Take "Daddy, it's me" photo from the late night challenge. at first i didn't get what the photographer wanted me to see or feel there untill i read the title.but i do not score any less or more for a title. to me its not part of the photo in most cases.

Can you believe I have over 36 triangles in my photo and there not the main element in the photo? I realize after the fact what I have done and except all responsibility for my lower scores. You learn. |

Consistency is good?? yes? on score and comments!
I think i have learnt my lesson, repetedly!
Mine is very much a personal tast shot, and am learning that others pick up what i was going for very quickly, but see it as a bad thing.
I may have done it differently if i had the challenge in mind at the time of composure, or if i was shooting it for someone elses tast.
As ive heard here before, that is the hardest thing to judge when shooting for a challenge, someone/everyone elses tasts and i can only imagine what it would be like doing it for a career for something such as a wedding! Im not enviouse of those people!
Im not complaining, as i have some great comments, and will learn a more than i hoped for from my first submision. Thanx
