Aerospace engineers study owls for stealth technology!
"Curved wingtips and combed feathers are what provide an owl with silent flight, the trailing feathers on the back end of the wing are tattered like the fringe of a scarf.Owls' tattered fringe feathers help to break up the sound waves that are generated as air flows over the top of their wings and forms downstream wakes.
The noise reduction achieved from the tattered fringe makes owls the quietest flying birds."
It really is something when one flys by you with a very large wingspan and you don`t hear a thing!

This is a "Mad Robin". He's been fluttering up to/against my dining room windows for days. Trying to get in? Kill himself? I don't know, but it's annoying.

Still processing (slowly) the over 600 RAW shots I took on a recent trip to the SW, USA. Here are a few:
Edit: BTW - all were shot using a monopod as I was on the move most of the time.

edit: Wouldn't mind some feedback on this one (on the image page). I'm not a fan of bird shots ('cept the birds of prey), but I was experimenting and shot about 50 photos and dodged bird crap for an hour just to get this one decent shot.

Can't resist posting another bird shot. My husband bought me a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS as a gift and it's so fun to play with.

Nova, I love the picture of the pileated woodpecker, they are very similar to the almost extinct ivory-billed woodpecker. Those owl pictures are awesome! I haven't seen an owl here in RI for probably 5 years.
Seanachai, the cybird is fantastic! What a great job!

Thank you dragonlady! There has been talk of a BIRDS challenge, and I have been avoiding posting any pics of pileated woodpeckers because I thought I would try to get a good one for that challenge if it ever happened. But I was so pleased with that shot, I couldn't resist. BTW, I got an email this morning telling me that the photo will be Canons POTD on Tuesday May 3rd... my first! Thanks again, Ray |

Birds seem to be a very popular subject this time of the year. I caught one Black Crowned Night Heron. S/he let me get within 12 feet and this is one of the pictures I got.
