Anyone know what happened to the photograph of the mother in the hospital bed and a family member next to her?. I rated it 10 and was my favorite from the moods challenge, but now I can't seem to find it. It was probably one of the hands-down best shot I've seen on dpc...

Thanks for the quick reply...I hope their shot was recognized in the challenge. Too bad they requested it taken down because I personally thought it raised us all up a bit; even though it first saddened you when seeing it, it ultimately portrays the love that some have for others. Sometimes you have technically perfect shots but they say nothing and other times there may be relatively simply shots that move you to tears and embody what "it" - photography, life, humanity, everything - is really all about. That photo did just that.
I hope that the family captured in the picture is doing well.

The photo brought on strong emotions to a lot of people, for me ... it was remembering my mother and dad who have passed away in the last few years.. that picture was the only one that brought up emotion in me as I looked at the photos in the challenge.

I'm sure your glowing comments are worth more than any virtual ribbon he may have won. |

that picture made me cry everytime i looked at it ..
made me miss my parents everytime i looked at it ..
I hope they relize that while it may not have gotten the score they wished it had, that it touched me and others in a way that none of the other challenge entries did.

Wow, I left a comment saying it made me feel really uncomfortable having to vote and comment on it, as I felt scared to say anything negative. It also felt a little out of place to me in a competitive challenge.
I hope the people who it really touched can forgive me feeling this way. |

I've spoken with the photographer and he's given me permission to post the following related to that image:
"The short story is that my Mom was very sick and needed the vent. All eight of her kids traveled from around the country to be with her. The critical point was to be when they pulled the vent. Would she be able to breathe on her own? Two by two, we all went in and visited with her. We sang to her, we held hands....and she squeezed our hands. That shot was when my brother visited her for the 1st time. I started to take a shot of just him next to her and he broke down as I snapped. He later thought the picture was very emotional and powerful. My Mom pulled through. The vent was removed and she improved. We all got to see her again and although she couldn't talk well, she joked with us and we got to tell her how much we loved her. As I said, she even commented on the photos and said when she gets better she'll even do more photos with better hair! I later submitted that photo only after talking to both my Mom and my brother. Neither even had to think about it. "Why not?" they would say. My Mom was moved out of ICU to a regular room, then a couple days later to a skilled nursing facility. We thought by God's grace, my Mom's life was spared and we would have her back to normal in the coming weeks. All eight of her children returned to our homes. While my Dad was visiting with her, she started having breathing difficulties, they rushed her back to the hospital where she died in my Dad's arms.
The visits each of us had were to be our final good-byes. I thank God for giving me the chance to kiss her and tell her how much I loved her.
During my shock and grief upon learning of her passing, I thought the picture was now not appropriate for DPC. I truly appreciated most of the comments and the emotions that the picture stirred.....but I did not have the strength to defend those that interpreted the photo incorrectly. I was hurting too much, so I requested that the picture be pulled, and ClubJuggle was very kind to oblige before I left town for the funeral. I'm sorry for causing confusion and distress among the membership, for my intention was merely to show a photo that truly defined emotion for me.
Guys, we were blessed with a gift during the Moods Challenge. We constantly say we want less formulaic entries, that we want powerful stories to what we see here. For a little bit, we got that. The mother in that image touched all of us, and made us think. I personally thank the user for sharing that moment with me. It reminded me just how important the people in my life are. It reminded me just how powerful photography is.
God bless him and his family.

Bob you were not alone with your feelings. I also found looking at the image very uncomfortable. It was as if I was intruding. I left comments on the photo and the photographer kindly pm'd me to discuss what I had said. At the time his Mother was showing signs of recovery and I passed on my best wishes for her recovery. It is only now that the very sad news as come to light.
I pass on my deepest condolence to the family concerned at such a sad time, My heart goes out to them all

I also was extremely uncomfortable with the shot and wrote comments to that degree..got basically the same response as mentioned above from the photographer(but no mention of his mother passing away at that point).
For me, this brought me straight back to when my grandmother was in the hospital 17 years ago and personally I couldn't imagine taking a photo of her in that state, let alone entering it in a contest. This is not to pass judgment, just my own personal statement.
My heart goes out to the photographer and his family in this very sad time of the loss of his mother.

While I am sorry to hear of the subject's passing I am in agreement with the photog's decision to pull the shot, although probably not for the same reasons. Some things are just too personal to share publicly; if not for yourself, out of respect for the feelings they may raise in others.

That was my Mom and my photo in discussion. Thank you all for you kind comments. You have no idea how comforting they can be. I keep trying to find that magic button to press to make everything OK....but there is no button, just people like you and family.
Sincerely,
Mark (4score)

That's some story. It tugged my heartstrings just reading about it. I hope he is able to repost the photo someday. It sounds like it was a great shot, full of meaning. |
