The EF-S 18-55mm is plain crap. I hate it, wish I had not elected to get it with my 20D kit. So its not a difficult lense to beat, quality wise.

I have been impressed with some of the new Tamron XR DI lenses. Once I purchase a Digital Rebel XT as a secondary body (and my wife's primary) the newer Sigma and Tamron's will probably be the route I take.

That being said, for my primary shooting i'll still save my money for the L.

I just love this talk about Ansel Adams and to read about you comparing Ansel Adams lenses to the Canon toys :)

Ansel Adams shot most of his pictures on a Large format camera, with 8"x10" and 10"x11" film.

to try to compare that with a 1"x1.5" (25x36mm) film cameras is just rediculous, if Ansels camera were digital then it would have been 1 gigapixel, or 1000 megapixel, the 10"x11" is about 64x the size of 35mm film, and the 1Ds mark2 compares in quality to the best 35mm film, that gives 16Mpixels x 64 or 1 Gigapixel.

I've seen a large format camera.. and it is LARGE.. I could fit my whole cameragear with tripods and backpacks inside the Large format :)

The next step up from 8x10 is 11x14, actually, for large format films. Very rare though.

When it comes to lenses, I believe you get what you pay for. Why does the Tamron cost over 3 times less?

The camera store guy I was talking to yesterday (who I don't necessarily believe) claimed that Tamron actually makes some of Canon's lenses, or maybe it was the optics. "You just pay more for the Canon name." Anyone know if there's any truth to this?

this might be true for some optics in the kit lenses and other cheap lenses, but all the expensive stuff like the "L" lenses are 100% made in Canon laboratory with no help from outside labs :)
