I am looking to add a wider angle lens to my collection and have read a number of reviews of the 10.5mmm fisheye and the 12-24mm. Both seem to get excellent reviews. I am using the d70 so have a 1.5x crop factor, so the 10.5 -> 16mm is very appealing. The 12-24, however, is almost as wide and has a greater range, though I have read that its performance at 12-16mm is just good, not great. Has anyone used either of these lenses (or both)? I would appreciate any input that I could get. My main use for the wide angle would probably be architecture, landscapes, and up-close portraits.
Thanks!

I've used both lenses and they are both GREAT, however they are not comparable in usage. The 10.5 is a full frame fisheye, and as such makes it unusable for traditional architecture photography. I realize that the marketing folks at Nikon are pushing the correction feature in Capture 4.x to use as a non-distorted wide angle, but that comes at the loss of resolution (you can do the same in Photoshop). It also makes composing the original image difficult because you really wont know where the edge of the frame is.

I have not experienced any negatives with the 12-24 at 12-16 setting. Like any wide-angle it is prone to flare it a bright light source hits at certain angles. I can’t use my gel filter holder set less than 15 without cropping the corners. Traditional filters (just one) shouldn’t be a problem. Of course the 10.5 can’t be filtered from the front.

I actually use the lens on my film cameras from 18-24 with no fall off at the edges. It is an extremely sharp lens. It does have a little barrel distortion at 12, but not enough to be a deal breaker.

The fish is a joy. I had one for a few weeks to try out. Loved it. But it is a very particular piece of glass. You lose detail in the corners and have to watch for the effect of the fish carefully. I wanted a very specific effect and got it. Love the lens, plan on getting one. For what you want, the 12-24 is probably the better option.

If possible, try them both out.

i love love love love my Sigma 15mm on the D70. i can't say enough about it. it gives a great fisheye effect when i want it, and PTLens (panotools) is able to de-fish the shots with VERY minimal distortion.

at 15mm with the 1.5 equivalent it's not SUPER wide (even less with the de-fishing technique), but it's crisp and gives great color.
