"Sharp"

Take a 100% crop of the sharpest most detailed photo you possibly can. Use any sharpening or contrast filters to create the sharpest image possible. It can be macro, tele, you name it.

:)

I searched the "Challenge History"....I am almost surprised there has never been a challenge on this.

I believe that this challenge has never been run due to the legal liability of the site to users who might cut themselves when handling their entries ;-)

Edit:
All joking aside, I like the idea, it really cries out for a larger format than the 640px dimension we currently have to work with, but that's another debate.

Worth1000 did a "Sharp" challenge a month or two ago, and it was lame. It takes little or no skill to make a sharp picture after downsizing to 640 px and using unsharp mask.

At the risk of hijacking this thread, what exactly do you (or anyone) mean by 100% crop?
For example, if I were to take a large-ish picture and use the crop tool to make a 640 x 480 pixel box & chose a spot to crop, would that be a 100% crop?

Dang-it! i still feel like such a newbie sometimes!!

Yes, your procedure yields a 100% crop, as long as you don't resize it after cropping. A 100% crop is defined by the fact that it is displayed at the same scale it was shot at, in other words at "100% magnification".

I respectfully disagree. It takes a lot of skill to render very fine detail at the small display size without the photo appearing oversharpened.

Thanks Kirbic.

May as well call it the "Strut Your dSLR" challenge. No others need apply. But it would be interesting, no question about it.

I'd take this as a challenge to submit using my 3.1 Mpx Nikon 995, and score above the 50th percentile, but right now I can't even do that with my 10D, LOL.

So it becomes a USM challenge.

IMO, it becomes a...

- Photography challenge: render a subject's fine detail at just the resolution limit of the eventual reduced-size image
- A resizing challenge: Technique in resizing has a great impact on the final result
- And yes, a USM challenge. Sharpening technique is critical.

Another newbie-type question:
What's the diffence between 'sharpen image' and 'unsharp mask'?
(I use GIMP - don't know if that'll make any difference.)

Challenge would not necessarily require a 100% crop (but I think many will want to do so as reducing an image's size often soften's it greatly). Yes USM helps but often it's still not as crisp as it was out of the box so to say.

The whole point would be to take a photo that captures intense detail and texture...whether a 100% crop, USM processed, or hooked up to a microscope .

Just amaze and wow each other with texture and detail...
