I had an idea, and we could do it with 2004 entries,....but why not a best of the best?

The idea would be that the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of all challenges in 2004 would be collected together for a re-vote. (not weighted in users averages) The top three would win an "Annual Ribbon".

I also think since in this challenge all entries have already been submitted that we'd offer a reward of of a free 20x print for the 1st place and a free 8x10 for 2nd and 3rd.

But I think this would be fun. No entry, no submission...just voting on our best photo entries of the year?

I think there were 100-120 challenges last year. So that'd be about 300+ entries for voting. Not too bad....I think it'd be good to include 1,2,3 place because sometimes it's mere shavings of a point difference.

Good idea, it'll be interesting to see if the free study winners come out on top...

Because there aren't enough things to vote on already? ;-)

in theory, i like the idea.

in practice, though, i think a lot would be lost in a contest like this. since the photogs would be "known" many may argue that that tainted the vote, etc.

I personally don't like the idea of recylcling winners. Also, many were done for a specific theme, and their score reflects the theme. Yet each challenge has many excellent, sometimes even "better" photos, which don't win, because some people didn't see the connection to the theme. So when comparing across challenges, why don't these deserve a chance?

I personally prefer having an open "Best of 2004", "Best of 2005" challenge where everyone submits their best shot during a time period.

Also, as to the ribbon winners (and others), you already have a "Best of the Best". It's called the site favorites list. The ones on the top of that list are the best of the best, as judged by people liking them enough to put into their favorites.

Interesting..I wonder if it could be thought out so we didn't have that problem, Karmat.

good point...maybe the SC can figure out who has the highest combined score among all their blue ribbons then reds and yellows. This could be interesting since someone with 2 blues may in fact have a higher overall combined score than someone with 3 blues. this sounds like a ton of work though. (glad I'm not on the SC) :)

Personally I think it an OK idea but I don't think in reality it will work. There would be the problem of knowing whose picture it is. And I believe we would seem more campaigning going on than during a Presidential election trying to get every vote possible, hoping to win. LOL.

Seems pointless and contentious to me. It involves making a non-anonymous challenge out of all the top-scoring images, or, in effect, a "free study" of the top images. But many of those images were very purpose-specific to their challenges, and to re-evaluate them in a free study would be pointless.

Here's what would bug me; suppose the yellow ribbon in challenge "x" ended up scoring BETTER than the blue ribbon in that same challenge? This would be rather weird, altogether. Especially if the maker of that image happened to be a well-loved DPC stalwart and the blue ribboner was someone who is not very active.

I agree with the comment that we already have such a ranking, and it's called "site favorites".

Not really, because the yellow ribbon may have been a "better photograph" but less applicable to the specific challenge.

There has also been the comment of submitting "Personal Best for the Year"....and although I'd love to see this, it was brought up before that such would be an immensely large challenge submission.

Didn't we do a best of 2004?

Yes, of course that's true, but it still does strange things to the karma of the site IMO. I would not like to see such a reshuffling, some people are bound to take it the wrong way.

My bad Karmat....

*gee....how did I ever miss that one*

:(

Finds photo of a brick wall, find photo of himself. Bangs photo of himself against photo of a brick wall!

(yes, I discovered the above was much less painful... ;)
