My sister just called me. She was considering purchasing a D70 but would like to know what is the difference between the D70 and the D70S. As far as I can tell the only difference is in a slightly larger LCD display and the batteries used. But I am not aware of the advantages or disadvantages of either type of battery.

I'm new to DSLR's and not "up" on the battery types, etc.

Can anyone tell me if that is the only difference between the cameras and what advantages or disadvantages there are with the D70S's battery?

I admit I'm clueless :) so please help!

The D70s has also advanced auto-focus features and a cord remote shutter can be plugged in. A big plus for those who use tripods.

Oh good. I will relay that info to her.

Can you tell me anything about the batteries used? What the difference is between the ones for the D70 and the D70S?

The D70 will have a software upgrade this month with the same menues as the D70s and the new AF features.

The battery life of the D70 is more than excellent (I can do a full day of studio work and it still shows full). I heard the D70s is even better.

You can check a compare chart HERE.

I don't think there is much difference from what I saw on the D70 brochure and the D70s that I got. Check out the Nikon website for full specifications.

Yep! You can do a lot of photography on one battery charge.

I shot more than 500 pics on one battery this weekend. Still shows 3/4 full.

If you can get a good deal on D70 as "last generation" merchandise, then I'd take advantage of it since a firmware update is coming. The larger LCD on the D70s is nice, but there's no real problem with the one on the D70. Cable release is a similar situation. Nice, but not necessary. I always use either the self timer or the $19 wireless remote on my D70, and it hasn't really been a problem.

On the other hand, if money is not an issue, the D70s does include some convenient updates that would be enjoyable to have. I'd say the decision comes down to budget more than anything else.

the main diffrences are listed in this thread already

hehe except for the fact that they want to compette with the reb. xt so the size is also slightly aultered to the small er side of the dslr camera......(don't quote me on that its just what i've heard)
