Good choice for my primary lens?

The lens is very sharp and I am happy with it. The AF motor is terrible though, you will have a tough time catching anything that is moving quickly. I'm not sure I would recommend it for a primary lens if it is the only one that you will have, but I would definately recommend it as a macro lens and portriat lens

its an excelent lens, great quality and sharp images. as md8speed said the AF is on the slow side, but it is still a wonderfull lens

Primary lens, as in the one you plan to use the most? No, a good zoom would be better, or a shorter prime like a 35mm f2.

Unless all you want to do is macros.

Well it's mainly for Macros, but I just read it's also great for portraits and such so I finally bit the bullet and bought one.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

If you wouldn't mind, post up some images that used the lens. I'm looking to buy a 100mm macro lens sometime in the next two weeks, and would appreciate some opinions on the sigma, as well as the canon incarnation. Thanks.

Yeah, saw those already. How about some more...I ain't no ribbon winner, and I doubt I'll be one. So I'm looking for "middle achieving" samples that I can possibly shoot too.

Just kidding. I'm wanting a larger body of samples, that's all.

he uses that lens with a 50mm lens reversed attached to it with a coupling ring to get a 2:1 ratio

I think that the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM would be a much better choice. It's only about $50 more and is rated slightly better in image quality and "very fast" focusing vs. "slow" for the Sigma.
