Canon/Nikon: This is an endless and futile debate. Professional photographers use either - as well as the other models. Photography is all about the photographer - the rest is just channeling light through a black box and a bunch of gadgetry that makes doing this easier and faster (mind you I am interested no one has entered into the CMOS v CCD debate in this thread).

I have owned Nikon, Canon, and Pentax SLRs (fully manual to fully automatic, high range and consumer level, and most recently digital), and frankly you will be happy with whatever you purchase - Canon and Nikon both make EXCELLENT products. Do watch the lenses though - you can pick up very good low cost lenses, just as you can get real lemons (from both Nikon and Canon).

You need to know how you will use your camera, and what is most important to you. Each brand, and each model within each brand, and each lens model, is designed slightly differently to suit different consumers (and they can NEVER make everyone happy). If you outline how you use your camera 80% of the time, and what is most important to you, it might be easier to recommend a kit within your price range that is likely to suit you best. Be aware though... You can easily find yourself spending over your budget in this game!

What??? I heard that unless you use Canon and L lens exclusively, your pics will look like vomit!!!
Can it be that what really matters most is composition and lighting?
I whole heartedly agree with bhowie. I would bet that if we took a nice shot with a Canon and a same shot with a Nikon, no one would be able to tell which camera produces which shot.
Before you go buying though, got to see how it feels in your hand and if the camera has the features you need for the price you are willing to spend. One thing I like on a D50 over a D70 is that it has a bigger LCD screen.

the 300D is not a bad choice especially with the budget you are after.

.....rah,rah, shish koom bah, gooooooo CANON...yeahhhhh!!!! (ouch that hurt)

While Canon is ahead in some, perhaps most aspects, Nikon is ahead in at least one aspect -- wireless transmission of images directly from the camera, a feature much appreciated by photojournalists.

And Nikon seems to have a greater number of shots in burst mode than Canon does. But how long of a burst do you really need?

I think you've gotten some good advice with the comments to look at the Nikon D50 or D70. The price for either of these is closer to what you can afford and you already have some lenses to start shooting with. I think its ridiculous to expect that everyone who buys into an SLR will want or need professional grade lenses. That's one of the nice features of an SLR. If you just want to use some of the features of an SLR you can opt for slower lenses with glass that'll be just fine for personal use. Heck, you can make tons of money with that kind of equipment if you want, too. Then again, if you get a nice D50 and decide that you can't live without that awesome Nikkor lens; well, drop the money and it'll fit right on the body you have. There are arguments for Canon vs Nikon and I'm all about using Canon but for someone just getting in and already having some Nikon lenses to start with I don't see a compelling reason yet to switch to Canon unless you just have a hankerin' to.

Hi All,

Thanks for the overwhelming response. Interesting war between Nikon / Cannon!!. After going thru responses I have come to conclusion that Nikon D50 / D70 would be ideal choice. I checked on the Nikonimaging website and both D 50 & D 70 take my current D Type AF Lenses with full function support. Thayt is relyy good news and by buying abody or a KIT that comes with a standard lens I would have a reasonable kit.

Any one selling a used a D 70??, body and a basic Lens. Let me know.

Another aspect where Canon is not the leader is in the size of LCD screens. Nikon's top DSLRs have had 2.5 inch screens for the last two generations while the big Canon's are only 2.0 inches. At the next level Canon's latest, the 350XT, still uses a 1.8 inch LCD as did the 300D, while Nikon increased from 1.8 to 2.0 when updating the D70 to the D70s.

Brand loyalty has it's place, but too much of it can lead you toward tunnel vision.
