You're absolutely right. It's not a concious change. It's not an intentional change, however, it is a change which IMHO makes the site less helpful for newer users (those that truly want to improve) in particular.

EXCELLENT POINTS!!!! I take all my comments, read them and then look at my photgraph with new eyes... and guess what! they're almost always right! and those that say they dont like pink where i've used pink and wnt me touse blue.. well thats an opinion I respect.
As for the comments that make no sense. have a strong opinion. or have a question.. well during the challenge voting I dont think its right to answer them durign voting . So i DONT CARE if they have a bag over their heads... or their names come up.

I really don't think so. If you don't care for a comment.... ignore it.... I have gettne a few comments that I personally felt were totally inappropriate, but I simply ignored them and moved on. I am only 27 years old, but I have managed to learn this much; the world will NOT end if someone disagrees with me or says something I don't care for. it's inevitable that someone's going to offend you. Heck, some people do it on purpose just to see what will happen. If you give them the response they want, they'll do it again. simply put, just move on, it's a comment it's an opinion, it's not going to dictate the rest of your life. |

But it may make you a better photographer... I totally agree with you and take it one step further. PM's from those that can not accept criticism also will not hurt you in any substantial permanent way which is why I will not change my commenting style. If I offend one person out of ten with my comments, I'm sorry you don't like my suggestions. If I help one person out of a hundred with my suggestions, that far outweighs the ten that can't see a suggestion for what it is, a suggestion...

I've actually adopted an easy solution ... I just don't read the comments until the voting is over, so I don't have to stress about my photo at all. None of it means anything until the end anyway. Then, if I do have a response to a comment, I can go ahead.
Instead of obsessing over my submitted photo -- about which I can do nothing at this point -- I prefer to concentrate on getting an image for the next challenge, or voting on the other photos.
For an even more extreme version of this, you can turn of the display of your score completely until the voting's over. |

I was told to put this here rather than in a new thread:
Oh Gosh!
Guys! Wow, was not expecting to spark off a whole series of arguments and hectic discussions. I apologise for having offended anyone with my 'anonymous voters - cowards' post! I was simply irritated by a non-constructive negative comment, which came from an anonymous voter and wanted to comment on it and didn't know how or where to go and thought the forum might be the best place.
I do not so much mind if people comment anonymously as long as it's constructive (even if negative), this particular comment was just so unhelpful and it frustrated me that the person "hid", too.
As I mentioned before, I am not entirely familiar yet with all the dp challenge etiquettes and general behaviour of those who frequent the site, I tend to journal on livejournal, which has a very different feel and atmosphere to it (obviously; it's not about competition there, so I wasn't expecting a similar environment here).
Thanks all for replies to my former post, I have a better understanding now of the hows and whys of 'anonymous voting/ commenting' and apologies again for any un-intended offence caused.

Hey Tam- don't be a bit hard on yourself. On a site comprised of hundreds of members, one is left to their own devices to interpret typed words as opposed to facial expressions or tone of voice. You'll get responses all over the map no matter what your topic or intentions. At least it provoked some intelligent responses and some darn good humor! |

Apology accepted, but take note of what you put in the subject of your post and understand how that is clearly provocative. It would be akin to posting "Women from London - Morons?" ;-)
Seems like most everyone learns from these debates and they tend to remain civil when you exclude the namecalling.
