I was just looking at this page: //www.huntington.org/Information/photo.html

and noticed they distinguish between "vacation-style" shooting and "professional photography". From the sound of it, I don't think I would have too much luck if I tried going there and shooting how we all tend to do... setting up, walking around by myself.. camera bag, lenses, etc, etc... but does anybody know for sure? I think it would be interesting to shoot there, but wouldn't know how to convince them that I'm shooting for pleasure and not money.

You should be fine. These are standard boilerplate disclaimers. Don't bring your AlienBees and you should be just fine. :)

Yup I think you'll be fine too. Why shouldn't "vacation-style" photographers be allowed good equipment and to get good quality shots? They even state that tripods are allowed in the gardens which is even more reassuring.

We took tons of shots over there last year with the tripods and all our lens. There were actually lots photographers out taking photos and no one said a word. It is a really beautiful place and I would go back again. Have fun and stay the day. I am sure that you will enjoy yourself. The Rose Garden Tea Room is also an excellent place to take a break and have something to eat. You do need reservations though. It was really excellent. :)

Brian,
I live about 10 minutes from there and shoot there a lot. They say no professional photos and prohibit tripods (although I saw some using it without being stopped) and no flash photography indoors. Otherwise, it is very nice place to shoot. There are always people with tons of equipment shooting unmolested. I wouldn't worry about being harassed. They are so used to photographers, you won't get any attention unless you pull up in a truck filled with lighting equipment. :)
Right now is good time to go, as flowers are blooming, but some might be wilting now. In the middle of the garden, there are ponds with ducks, geese, and coy fish that's nice to shoot after shooting flowers.
