I understand that means through the lens but iam a little confused about how it works and what makes it work and what it doesnt do anybody have a clues? thanks

The big advantage of the TTL is that you can't possibly (it is very hard) to take a photo with the lens cap on!

Otherwise, there is a mirror that reflects the light upwards towards the viewfinder while composing your image, and when you click the shutter, the mirror gets lifted and the light goes straight through to the film plane/sensor - whathaveyou.

The major advantages of TTL viewing with a true SLR is that you get real-time updating on the viewfinder (you're looking at the world optically, not electronically, so it's great for action) and the fact that youc an stop the lens down and preview your depth of field in the viewfinder before shooting.

Prosumer cams like mine are also ttl, but the image is delivered to the viewfinder electronically. So I can see exactly what I'm shooting, but the detail's not good, I can't preview DOF, and there's a lot of lag in the system so it's almost impossible to shoot action well.

A quick google search turned up this basic explanation of an SLR camera, which includes a graphic that demonstrates how the TTL (Through-The-Lens) viewing works.

Oh i meant for the flash i got the slr ttl part already

Same principle.
The camera measures the light coming through the lense and adjusts flash output accordingly.
