I have a new lens (three weeks old) and I was looking yesterday at the front glass and noticed a small speck. I attempted to remove it and the speck could not be removed. At this point I noticed it is on the inside of the lens. I cannot understand how this could have happened I was under the impression a lens is sealed tight. The lens is a canon 75-300mm IS.
My question is; is there anything I can do to correct this problem? This lens is brand new; it is past the 14-day return period at bhphoto.

Take it back and ask for a replacement. |

Dust specks inside lenses are very very common, and are not cause for replacement. Almost any lens will accumulate a few specks over time. Some zooms, like the Canon 100-400, tend to accumulate a lot of dust, since they move a lot of air in & out when zooming. In fact, the 100-400 is known by the nickname "the dust trombone."
Dust inside a lens will not affect the photo quality at all unless there is an awful lot of it, and I mean an awful lot.

kirbic, I did not know this thanks for the info. Anyway I just got off the phone with bhphoto and they said they will exchange it. I was very happy to here this, but then as kirbic said I guess I should expect a little dust inside over time. |

All my lenses have at least a tiny bit of dust visible when you stare at the glass..even on my brand new 70-200. Specs. But they don't show up in pictures that I'm aware of. |

So, do you think it is a waste of time exchanging the lens?
and you are right I do not notice it in any photos

I think it's an uneccessary risk, if the current lens is functioning well, keep it. Don't trade a known-good lens for an unknown quantity, plus shipping time and risk.

My 50 1.8 has a clearly visible dust speck inside. Bugs the heck out of me, but only when I look at it from the front side. Never has affected my pictures... |

I posted earlier saying to get it replaces because if it happened to me, whether it showed up on images or not, I would ask them to get me one without the dust. When I am paying for a lens I don't expect it to have dust inside. I also know that it happens, but I am not someone who's comfortable paying for things that I didn't really ask for. I am sure no one pays for lenses with dust inside and if there's dust inside, I don't see why anyone should just accept it and walk away without questions.
It's down to how you feel about it. |
