I took a shot for "Five" on May 4th, 11pm PDT ( challenge was announced at 9pm on may 4th for me ). If I am trying to enter May 4th as my date of shot, I get an error msg about date being out of challenge submisison dates. What should I do ?

I would be interested in the answer for this as well as I no longer live in the eastern timezone.

I'd suggest at this time entering a date of May 5, and put the correct date shot in the details. I haven't faced this but it's certainly an issue. I don't actually recall the discussion coming up before, prolly because the vast majority of us are procrastinators and so we never face the issue!
I'll direct SC & admin attention to the thread.

Edit: Kirbic already replied with more weight...

Interesting question... technically, it is possible for some of us (especially those living in Hawaii) to submit to the challenge even before it started!
Hawaiians can read the challenge description, go out, make a couple of shots, get back home, edit all of them, pick the winner and click on the submit entry button before the submission period has even started in the local timezone.

Should we all set our cameras to EST?

Or, can we "cheat" when submitting the photo and say that it was taken during the required interval, and cope with SC when asked for proof?
SC would have to take into consideration
a) our primary residence
b) any exception, such as taking pictures while traveling (especially if you go to hawaii where it matters most)

Keep your camera set to your local time. We adjust for time zones and locations. As for entering the photo. Just put the 5th, and make sure in the details that you list that your exif should say the 4th due to time zones/location.

This is a very good question....

I didn't even think of this. But I think in all fairness, since the challenge ends three hours earlier for west coasters then their entries should be accepted.

Of course this could be abused. But I believe users should be able to adjust for GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) to -5 equivalent (EST). Then if a DQ request or ribbon win review is made the judges would have final say as to whether they accept the time adjustment. (For example, if they see the Statue of Liberty in the background they might not believe you were shooting on the streets of L.A.)

We do ask that cameras be set to your local time. We'll take that into account when reviewing DQ requests. If you travel outside your local timezone, you may leave your camera set to your local time, but be sure to fill in the location of the shot on the submission form.
For example, prior to joining the SC, I took a shot in Singapore that ribboned (Toucan Candid). My camera was set to CST, and showed 02:18AM on 05 March, when the shot was taken 14 hours later at 04:18 PM 05 March SG time. I noted the location in the details. If, for instance, I had taken the shot on the last day of the challenge, it would have been possible for my shot to be taken "the day after" the challenge ended (SG time). In reality, of course it would still have been legal, and the timestamp and location data would have shown this.

Never had this problem before. I thought it was 24hr challenge and had no time on thursday, so tried shooting something on wed night itself.. very rare for me :)
I put May 5th as the date to be able to submit...
