The "Beginner Bee". Swapped out the standard umbrella for one with a removable cover for "shoot-through's"
I'm going to try to get by for a while with a single light, but I can already hear that little voice saying "damn the reflector - get a fill light!".
Before, I've struggled by with home depot shop lights. This is gonna be a lot of fun.. |

Other than on-camera flash and worklamps, I've never used real lighting equipment. Is there a learning a curve? If so, what's it like?
Thanks,
Jen

dunno - haven't played enough yet. I'm going to be doing some marketing photos for my office on Friday and I'm going to try to use my ABs then.

I think I skipped the learning curve on mine. Strange. |

I'm far from an expert - still learning my way around the lights. In any case, here is a photo I took using home depot halogens;
It isn't as sharp as I would have liked - not enough light to get a favorable aperture or speed. Shadows are a bit strong, and my daughter complained about the lights in her eyes.
Here is one I took this weekend with an alien bee - same location, same background (different daughter too).
I was able to use the best aperture and shutter speed my camera / lense combo would support. Additional lights for fill would be great, but for now, I am making do with a reflector. |

I have a set of hot lamps, but I am to slow and the heat build up gets to be to much.

Iv'e said it before and I'll say it again, Home Depot, or any hardware outlet is the poormans lighting source.
If you know what to look for,and how to manipulate the source, it can be an inexpensive venture.

Worklights definitely will get you by. The heat just isn't very model-friendly.

I don't know what light you use, but every light produces heat. Including flash, and flouresent.

you measure the duration of a flash, though, in fractions of a second. The halogens are on full-time.
True, the modeling light will be on with monolights, but that's just a 100 - 200 watt bulb. No worse than a table lamp. |

yeah, true, but ever been on a full blown shoot where the camera man has multiple sources of flash, and because the model costs $1000 per hour, the cooling down period is minimal, and the studio is blazing hot.
air conditioning was the third gift jesus gave after the wine and the fish.
