I said "flashtrax is best" and said I didn't know how to answer your original question.
The point is - you get what you pay for. Get a few CF cards for $250 CDN or get a Flashtrax for $500 CDN. Portable cd/dvd/harddrive are all going to be more cumbersome than what you want when you're out and about. You want something small and fast that can be recharged, taken out, downloaded to very easily and put away. Basically that leaves more cf and flashtrax type units. More CF is always nice, but not when 2 gig costs half of 20 gig.

Unless you want to carry around a bunch of cds or dvds or your laptop a portable hard drive is one of the better ways to handle this.
a 2.5 hard drive case is hardly bigger than a deck of cards...plus mine uses the same cordthat connects one of my card readers to my laptop or computer.
I can get a portable 2.5" 40gig hard drive for around $150.00CDN

This is what she suggested and it seems to fit the bill. What do you guys think?

I have already gone the route of portable storage (see photo below) and found that it is more economical to just have more image cards.

This might be a silly questions...but does that drive come with a power supply adaptor?
I know when you plug it into your computer it's powered off the USB, but what about when I'm dumping my photos?

Stupid question - but don't you need a computer or laptop to run the portable harddrive on that link? And if you do, why would you get it? You wouldn't be able to use that until you were at a computer??

Absolutely.... If you happen to hit the wrong person at the wrong time and they are adamant that you prove that you purchased these items in Canada, you have to be able to do just that.
I make a point of keeping all my receipts and for those things I do not have receipts for, I go to the closest Customs office, bring my gear with me and have them fill out a Y38 (green form)and keep it with me whenever I need to cross the border.

i don't know if this answers your question, but when you're on the road you can just walk to a photoshop and they'll transfer your images to dvd or cd. don't remember the prices in europe, but here in asia it's almost free! i've been on the road for 4 months now and this has served me well.
and if you're on a budget, on a trip for 12 days this should work well. even if you shoot 1gb a day. and you can use the extra 500 on something else. |

di53's suggestion looks good...memory/$ is a very decent buy.
What I'd want to know is how long the internal battery lasts (supposing it has one). You don't want to spend your holiday trying to find an outlet. |

This is what I'm planning to use for such a situation.
//cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=18872&item=7511049101&rd=1
I'm using a 20D so I'm going to shoot mostly RAW+small jpeg so I can review the files in the storage device. That is not available on the
rebel but you can store the RAW files in it. Reviews have been good.
If I were to buy 20gigs in CF that would be about $1800.00 USD so this seems very worth it. Hope this helps. |

Just for information, transfering Memory to CDs or DvDs is VERY EXPENSIVE in europe. I asked for a full gig of memory (jpgs and raw) and they wanted to charge me 26 Euro (that's about 50 canadian dollars). So there is no way its a good idea to "walk in a photo shop" and ask them to do a transfer. They get all the tourist to do the same, and they make big bucks.

Other question...
Of all the people using those Portable HD here...
ANyone can suggest one that DOESN'T require a PC to run. What i want is "Camera + Portable HD".
Situation: I'm stuck in the woods, find Big Foot, want to shoot 6000 RAW pictures of it. What do i bring with me? [/url] |

Originally posted by legalbeagle: I have recommended it before, but the Archos AV420 does everything the ipod does, plus has a 3.5" screen, can be plugged directly into a video source to act as a video recorder (which you can watch on the screen or playback to your tv at dvd-like quality), and has sound recording (plus can play and record radio with the radio upgrade). It is fractionally larger than an ipod, but only a small fraction of an inch in each direction. Oh - and it has a CF card reader slot built in which copies files across about 5x faster than the ipod (including RAW, though it can only display jpeg and bmp), and uses its own power. And it costs about the same. |
+ it has the European plugs included.

Yeah, I've heard it takes forever to download photos to it and the battery doesn't last very long. That's why I bought a Epson P-2000. I just used it for the first time today, and it works like a charm. You can read a review here.

this is what i've been looking at:

20gb, about 3 hours of actual downoading, and it comes with an adaptor that (i think) should work over there. $230

I purchased a "Compact Drive" about 6 months ago and I love it. Exactly the same idea as the x-drive pro, same price, but x5 the speed. The speed makes a real difference, I can download a 1Gb card in about 3 mins, the x-drive takes about 15 I believe.
My last overseas trip, to Thailand, I did with the x2 CF cards. Even then I got by as it was very easy to find somewhere to burn the CF card to CD. I simply got 2 copies made.
Only drawback to the Compact Drive / x-drive option is you can't see the photos when on the drive. However, I have yet to have a photo not copy correctly (and friend with the x-drive says the same for his) so they do seem an excellent option.

yeah, i think for me the xdrive, or photobank would be good options. They don't have a fancy colour display which is obviously going to drive up the price of other alternatives.

I have the Archos AV400 80GB and I went on a 5 day trip last week, I went to Rome and London, I took about 400-500 pictures RAW every day and used the Archos to empty my card, I browsed the pictures on the Archos (took RAW+JPEG) when I emptied the card ,just to see if some pitures needed to be shot again.
after 5 days of use I went home and uploaded the pictures from the Archos to my Mac, after that the battery in the Archos was down to 50%, I left the charger at home so the battery lasted the whole trip, I watched 1 movie on the archos while waiting for a flight, and I listened to MP3 about 3 hours while flying, still the battery only went down to 50% in 5 days.
cant reccomend the Archos AV enough, it's expencive, aroun $700 but it's soo worth every $, and while at home I have it connected to my TV and use it to play DivX and Xvid movies :) |
